Bobby Rush recovering at home after surgery to remove cancerous tumor
U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) was recovering at home Sunday after undergoing surgery recently to remove a cancerous tumor from his salivary gland.
Rush, 62, underwent surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center on March 1, according to a news release from his office. The cancer was found to be localized, the release stated, and Rush will begin post-operative treatments after full recovery from the surgery, which is expected to take three to five weeks.
Rush said his staff is handling “all legislative and constituent services priorities” while he recovers. U.S. House leaders, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are aware of his status, he said in the release.
Rush’s spokesman Toure Muhammad had no further comment on the congressman’s health late Sunday.
Rush has represented the 1st Congressional District of Illinois, which includes southern portions of Chicago and several suburbs to the southwest of the city, since 1993. He is serving his eighth term.
