Top Gear testing American metal

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by admin

Not long after we learned that the famous Top Gear trio was in the U.S., a fan managed to snap some shots of Clarkson, Hammond and Mays testing their favorite examples of American muscle at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The hosts made their way to salt flats by way of Reno, Nevada where they had a few modifications done to each vehicle in the name of high speed safety, namely driveshaft loops and fire extinguishers. If you saw our previous post on the subject, you already know that Clarkson is driving a Corvette ZR1, Hamster a Challenger SRT8 and May the super-fast but still luxurious Cadillac CTS-V, a car that shares much of its supercharged V8 architecture with the new force-fed mill in the ‘Vette. We can already surmise that the ZR1 easily took top honors at Bonneville thanks to its slippery shape and abundance of power. Now, which car wins the comparison test? We look forward to next season to find out. Check out the gallery below for more pics of the action going down, or click here and follow the photostream.

Flash of Genius film reveals dirty history of intermittent wiper

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by admin

Considering that automakers today are racing to develop complex electric drive and alternative fuel technologies, it’s amazing to realize that the biggest technological hurdle to overcome back in 1967 was getting wiper blades to operate intermittently. As it turns out, the history of how the intermittent wiper came to be is actually a dark tale in automotive history. Invented by college professor Robert Kearns in the late ’60s, the technology was shopped around to every major automaker and Ford was the first to adopt it. Except the house that Henry built screwed Kearns out of not only the money he was due, but also the credit for developing what automakers themselves couldn’t. That story has now been turned into a major motion picture called Flash of Genius that stars Greg Kinnear, Lauren Graham (the mom from Gilmore Girls), Dermot Mulroney and Alan Alda. We wouldn’t have thought a movie about windshield wipers would be very interesting, but the preview after the jump has us hooked. It’s slated to open in theaters on October 17th courtesy of Universal.

Knight Rider premiering online Sept. 17th, a week before broadcast

Monday, September 8th, 2008 by admin

Hey kids, don’t forget: the new, not-at-all-improved Knight Rider becomes a weekly series on Wednesday, September 24th. As was the case during the pilot that aired back in February, I’ll be on my couch with my laptop, liveblogging the proceedings and adding much-needed “perspective” each week, right until the show’s cancellation. Maybe you couldn’t care less about the liveblog, though. Or maybe you’re just a glutton for punishment. If that’s the case, you’re in luck — the Peacock is posting the season premiere online at NBC.com and Hulu.com on September 17, a week before the network broadcast. I’m gonna pass on the sneak peek, because I don’t want want to taint my initial reaction to KITT’s new Attack Mode (above). That, I’m saving for you guys. Mark your calendars. In the meantime, I’ll watch this again instead.

eBay Find of the Day: Michael Keaton’s Batmobile #5 of 5

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 by admin

Built atop a lowly Chevrolet Impala chassis (or two), we don’t imagine that the next owner of the Batmobile in this auction will be pulling too many Batman-esque stunts. Still, to own one of the vehicles used by Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger in the 1989 Tim Burton-directed movie is pretty cool. A few salient facts: This sucker is 20-feet long and 8-feet wide, so you’re going to need a Bat Cave-sized garage. It’s powered by a (probably anemic) Chevy 350 V8, so it’s fuel mileage theoretically approaches that of the fictional turbine engine depicted in the flick. Lastly, the new owner will need you to sign a Warner Brothers purchase agreement, which we hear is pretty limiting in what it allows you to do with the car. Still, how many people can actually say, “I think I’ll take the Batmobile to work today?” Therefore, we deem this car epic. Thanks for the tip, BMW122487!

eBay Find of the Day: Trans Am SE signed by Burt Reynolds

Mid-to-late 70’s Pontiac Trans Ams have really been picking up steam on the collector car market. While not nearly as powerful as their more muscular 1969-1974 forebears, the later TAs certainly have a unique and gaudy manly-quality about them, helped in no small part by their association with ’70s icon Burt Reynolds and, of course, the Smokey and the Bandit movie franchise. The vehicle you see in this auction is a particularly nice example of the breed. As a 1978 Special Edition Y/82 Trans Am equipped with the desirable Pontiac 400 engine with 4-speed manual tranny, this is already a collectible vehicle. The original Hurst Hatches and AM/FM/8-track player and CB radio along with the rare rear-console add to this bird’s rarity.

For real Burt Reynolds aficionados, though, this fire-breathing Poncho offers something truly special: his signature on the dash. Not only that, Burt drove the vehicle around while he was in Georgia helping to develop Year One’s Bandit Edition replica car and it has been on television numerous times. With all it has going for it, don’t expect this car to come cheap. In fact, it’s already past $46 grand with days still to go in the auction.

Harley-Davidson gets into product placement in new Indiana Jones flick

It seems that the marketing folks at Harley-Davidson have managed to get a bit of product placement for themselves, following the likes of Audi with Iron Man, Volkswagen with The Bourne Ultimatum and GM with Transformers. The new Indiana Jones movie, titled ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull’ features both Harrison Ford and Shia The Le Beouf riding what appears at first glance to be an old Harley. Upon closer inspection, the bike is actually a new model, complete with fuel injection and Harley’s new six-speed transmission. The movie-crew manages to make the bike look much older by using parts from older machines, such as the old Sportster tank and pre-war “beehive” tail light. Look real close and you may even notice the fake kick-starter which must just be welded to the frame.

As a celebration of the upcoming movie’s use of the bike, every Harley dealership will reportedly get the chance to order 30 pairs of free tickets to the movie to be given away as a promotion to customers.

Eye Candy: “Go Speed Racer Go

The music video for the updated Speed Racer theme, “Go Speed Racer Go”, has hit the web, and while the song itself gets annoying after a couple of verses (how many times can you listen to that refrain before going insane?), the actual video is mesmerizing. There’s a lot of footage that hasn’t been seen in the trailers and ads so far, and the cartoon come-to-life visuals are simply eye-popping. In that respect, anyone who ponies up ten bucks for a ticket is going to get his or her money’s worth. Hopefully, the strength of the story can match the undeniable visual power the Wachowski’s onscreen kaleidoscope is set to deliver. At least one early review indicates that may not be the case, unfortunately. We’ll wait ’till we see it ourselves next weekend to pass final judgement. In the meantime,

Red Car to Red Carpet: Schumi to star on the big screen?

“Retirement” is a relative term when you’re the fastest driver in the world. Since stepping back from his Formula One career, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher has remained a high-profile celebrity, often despite his best attempts to stay out of the limelight. When he’s not under investigation for commandeering a taxi or dedicating buildings, he’s competing ad-hoc in motorcycle races and coaching his son on a developing racing career of his own. Reports now suggest that Hollywood is offering Schumi a film on his life and career.
According to reports, Schumacher himself could star in the film, while Bruce Willis has also been attached to the project to play race commentator Murray Walker. It wouldn’t be Schumacher’s first foray into film, following his cameos in kids’ movies like Asterix and Pixar’s Cars. Although Schumacher has yet to accept the offer, his longtime manager Willi Weber has confirmed that it’s under consideration. If the project gets the green light, it could turn out to be the biggest racing film since Steve McQueen’s Le Mans.
