You know the drill. Days before the official consumer release on the 29th, out pops the final version of Windows XP SP3 on torrents, usenet, and warez sites. We haven’t confirmed it for ourselves but we’ve received multiple reports that this final, unmodified version features a legit Volume Licensed Key which handles that pesky WGA check without breaking a sweat. Should you be brave enough to install it then by all means drop us a line in the comments about your experience. Then again, why rush? You’ll likely have until 2012 to perform the update.

Alienware’s AMD-powered Aurora ALX picked up CrossFireX support just as soon as it went live from ATI, but it has taken a few weeks for the technology to make its way over to the iconic Area-51. Said gaming rig is now available with ATI CrossFireX, meaning that you can take advantage of all four GPUs across a pair of Radeon HD 3870 X2s. Full release posted after the jump.

HEATING THINGS UP – CROSSFIREX NOW OFFERED ON THE ALIENWARE AREA-51

For the first time, users can choose between the industry’s two dominant multi-GPU solutions on the same platform

Miami – April 28, 2008 – Alienware – the leading manufacturer of desktop, notebook and entertainment systems – now offers ATI CrossFireX™ on the Area-51® desktop computer. Alienware recently retooled and re-launched the Area-51, its flagship system, with NVIDIA® Quad SLI® graphics.

With four GPUs across dual graphics cards, CrossFireX cranks out not only intense, lifelike graphics but also the raw processing power necessary to manipulate and navigate real-time 3D environments for a never-before-seen gaming experience.

“This is huge,” says Marc Diana, Product Marketing Manager for Alienware. “One of the biggest reasons our customers choose Alienware is unmatched graphics performance. Adding a CrossFireX option to the award-winning Area-51 reaffirms its status as the world’s best gaming desktop.”

Remember those AMD Business Class desktops we told you about, oh, just hours ago? Looks like the first of the family are starting to roll out, beginning with the HP Compaq dc5850 and dx2450 Business Desktop PCs. Both rigs support “next-generation AMD Business Class processors” (that’s the Athlon X2, Phenom X3 and Phenom X4) along with the usual complement of slots / ports, and while the former gets integrated ATI Radeon 3100 graphics, AMD’s Cool’n'Quiet 2.0 technology, up to 8GB of RAM, an optional dual-drive RAID setup and a dual-layer DVD writer, the latter boasts NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE graphics, room for 4GB of RAM and up to 500GB of SATA HDD space. Best of all, both machines come in pretty easy on the wallet, with the dc5850 hitting in early May for $599 and the dx2450 available now for $369.

Oh yeah, you’ve options oozing everywhere for a bona fide gaming desktop that takes up some serious square footage in your domicile, but what about those looking for a potent portable? And we’re not talking laptops, either. Falcon Northwest’s FragBox 8500 — which sports a chassis that hasn’t changed much in years — was recently reviewed by the folks over at PC Magazine, and put simply, it was deemed a “game system without apologies.” Checking in at $1,895, critics found the internals to be “neatly put together,” the unit as a whole satisfactorily mobile and yes, they confirmed that “you will definitely be able to play the DX10-heavy versions of Crysis and World in Conflict at very decent frame rates.” Did you hear that? They said Crysis. Head on down to the read link for the full review of the Editors’ Choice-awarded machine.

Promiscuous Sony back in bed with Samsung for $1.8B S-LCD plant

The rumors were true: Samsung and Sony have agreed to extend their S-LCD partnership in a $1.8B 8th-gen facility. The second 8th-gen facility — dubbed 8-2 — will begin pumping out glass from the South Korean city of Tangjeong in Q2 2009 in sheets up to 220cm x 250cm. 51% of the panels manufactured belong to Sammy while the rest go to Sony. Of course, Sony is also shacking up with Sharp on a $3.5B LCD plant in Japan ready to swing into production sometime in 2010. Oh Sony, you naughty, naughty minx.

Updated iMacs coming next week?

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by admin

apple, imac, rumor

We’re not ones to peer too deeply into the Apple crystal ball, but Geeksugar says that spec-bumped iMacs are due on Tuesday, and the timing seems about right. Nothing major, apparently, just a speed bump and some bigger hard drives, but prices should stay the same. It’s still just a rumor, of course, but Geeksugar was right on the money about that MacBook / MacBook Pro bump last time around, apart from saying that multitouch trackpads would hit all of Apple’s portables. Perhaps some Best Buy / Future shop employees will let us take a peek in the database and let us know what’s up, hmmm?

Update: We’ve gotten a couple sketchy reports that entries for new iMacs are in fact popping up in retailers’ systems, but it’s getting hard to focus what with all the grains of salt we’ve taken.

Dell rumored to be selling XP until 2012, Ballmer says MS can “wake up smarter”

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by admin

Windows XP has a date with destiny scheduled for June 30, but it looks like the plucky OS just isn’t ready to go: Ultraportable OEMs will be able to preload XP until “one year after the general availability of Windows 7,” whenever that is, and now we’re hearing reports that Dell’s telling customers it’ll sell XP on professional systems until 2012. The Dell thing is just a rumor for now, but what’s Steve Ballmer doing telling reporters that although XP is EOL, “if customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter” and extend XP sales? Um, Steve? Customers have been feeding back like crazy and Microsoft has kind of ignored them, remember? Maybe it’s time for a quick nap.

Update: That was pretty funny for a totally unintentional typo, wasn’t it?

DIYer crafts Victorian-style all-in-one PC

It’s getting tough for steampunk fans to out-do one another these days, but DIYer Jake von Slatt has taken a solid shot at the crown with his latest creation, which one-ups most of the competition by going the all-in-one route. Of course, the fact that added thickness only adds extra character in this case makes things slightly easier but, as you can see in the fairly thorough how-to linked below, it’s still not something to be attempted lightly, with it even including a nail-biting encounter of a monitor with a table saw. Click on through for a video of that, and plenty more pictures of the entire process.

XPS 730 pops up on Dell’s support site

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by admin

730, dell, xps, xps 730, Xps730

It was kinda-sorta announced at CES and we’ve already seen some in-the-wild shots, but it looks like Dell’s newest gaming PC, the XPS 730, is getting close to release — it’s just gotten an official entry on Dell’s support site. Nothing really earth-shattering to be found, except for some hints that it’ll ship with either XP or Vista and confirmation that it’s triple-SLI ready in the owners manual. Alright, secret’s out — let’s see some specs, guys.

[Thanks, Andrew and Thomas]
