Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 by admin

apple, best buy, BestBuy, iphone, iphone 3g, Iphone3g

And now for the irony: it’ll be no right a buy as opposed to how you can obtain at ye olde Apple or AT&T store. Best Buy legally gets the chiefly third-party retailer in the US to sale the iPhone in an official capacity — 3G or otherwise — when it launches the iPhone 3G in Other 970 stores additonally an extra 18 dedicated Mobile settings on September 7 for the same $199 and $299 price level points at last found elsewhere. Quoth Best Buy Mobile’s CEO, “We had a lot of spinrt to do, obviously, to get in a position at which Apple and AT&T may feel wonderful throughout Best Buy Mobile carrying it, and that is how we have carried out in the go on 18 months.” In larger number of words, now has continued a quite persistent endeavor to rating the third-party exclusive basically from the time of the earliest ideal was announced, and it is easily now using off. There’s no proof on how the addition of Best Buy to the US dealings mix am able to effect creation or distribution, but at lowest there’ll be one larger amount of place to try to see Other frickin’ stock.

Intel wastes our period and yours amidst SL and WoW patrons for MIDs

Sunday, June 15th, 2008 by admin

intel, mid, second life, SecondLife, wow

Don’t get into the future of us here, Intel certainly isn’t construction full-featured Second Life and World of Warcraft apps for handheld Mobile Internet Devices. Instead they’re paying a new “Interactive 3D Streaming” tech to control and view the game remotely — similar to a couple of to overly Telekinesis app we saw messing WoW on the iPhone endure year, but Intel looks like it’s to be still a great deal more along. Their Xeon 5400 server can deal with 14 patrons simultaneously, but we are heralding the present will not be market prices effective for Blizzard anytime quickly — even though we can suppose fairly a few addicts rigging up similar institutions for themselves. The sad surprise right here is such a Intel might’ve just now found the ideal use for a MID yet.

Ubuntu gets ported to Sharp Zaurus PDAs

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

The Sharp Zaurus name might not be quite the force it once was, but it certainly still has its die-hard fan base, as evidenced by the recent efforts of some enterprising individuals to get Android up and running on the slightly out-dated hardware. Now it looks like you can chalk up another OS port to its list of accomplishments, with an early release of Ubuntu now available for the handheld. As you might expect, the 0.1 release is a pretty stripped down affair, with the entire download weighing in at a mere 80MB. Omegamoon, the individual responsible for the port (as well as the aforementioned Android hack), is also quick to point out that it’s not exactly a practical option just yet, adding that, “there’s a lot left to tweak of course, but a full-blown Ubuntu is on it’s way.” If you’re the adventuresome type, however, you can find everything you need to get things rolling by hitting up the link below.

RIM’s Blackberry 8300 “Daytona” with WiFi?

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

blackberry-prototipo2.jpg

Photos of a purportedly unannounced Blackberry codenamed “Daytona” are making the rounds in Spain this morning. This new RIM device clearly marked “evaluation unit” on the back is said to sport a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash, GPS, and that glorious WiFi we’re all missing on the 8800. Spanish site Xataka speculates that this media savvy device will carry an 8300 model number when it hits at the start of summer. Perhaps, but we’re still wondering when we’ll see the notorious 8820.

Update: A video has been posted by the Mentesdigitales site. Check that and more pictures after the break.

Details emerge on Apple’s acquistion of chip designer P.A. Semi

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

There weren’t a whole lot of firm details on the reasons behind Apple’s acquisition of chip designer P.A. Semi to be had back when the deal was announced last month, but it seems that a bit of the veil of mystery may now be lifting, at least if the word EETimes is hearing from its unnamed source is to be believed. Apparently, Apple was keen to have P.A. Semi’s crack chip-making team design a new chip for them, but P.A. Semi had “more or less burnt through its venture capital funds,” leaving them unable to take on the project. According to EETimes source, that meant that the only way to get P.A. Semi involved was for Apple to pay off all of P.A.’s investors and bring the company in-house, something they were able to do for a mere $280 million or so. Of course, as EETimes points out, the big question remaining is exactly what it is that Apple wants P.A. Semi to help it out with, and that’s a detail we’d expect to take considerably longer to trickle out.

BlackBerry 9000 gets a very early review

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by admin

lackberry, blackberry 9000, Blackberry9000, hands-on, preview, review, rim

We’re all about reviews of products before they’re released, but reviewing something before it’s even been officially confirmed by a company is its own special brand of magnificent. Granted, these are more like the hands-on impressions of a self-confessed BlackBerry addict, who was willing to fork over $828 US on the off chance that the eBay auction the other day was actually legit. A week later Kevin of CrackBerry.com has the BlackBerry 9000 in hand and seems to be loving every minute of it. Apparently the keyboard is better than the 8800 series, the OS4.6 is smooth, fast and pretty, and the 480 x 320 LCD is “awesome.” And don’t get Kevin started on 3G: the logo alone brought a tear to his eye — we’re clearly dealing with a bona fide fanboy here. That said, it’s an encouraging sign to see all those leaked shots weren’t just for show, there’s a real-live performer behind the legend. Kevin’s major caveat is the size and weight of the phone, compared to his Curve, but we’re sure the $828 hole in his checking account will have him coming to terms with that drawback in the near future. He’ll be posting more details and impressions as he goes.

Sony UX handheld gets outfitted with makeshift gamepad

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by admin

gamepad, gamepad hack, GamepadHack, ux, vaio

We’ve seen gamepads hacked for use with handhelds before, but they haven’t always exactly been the most elegant solutions. That’s happily not the case with this latest mod by Micro PC Talk forum member Dan Middle, however, who outfitted his Sony VAIO UX handheld with a discreet but usable gamepad attachment. The “hack” was made slightly easier by the use of a Genius USB mini gamepad, which was foldable to begin with, although Dan apparently did still have to hack it up a bit and attach it to a dummy CompactFlash card, which conveniently slots in right next to the USB port. As you can see in the video after the break, the setup appears to work quite well and, best of all, doesn’t require any modifications to the pricey UX itself.

Harris’ HTC-made Census handheld hits the FCC

Monday, May 5th, 2008 by admin

census, harris, htc, htc census, HtcCensus

Harris Corp’s HTC-made Census handheld may only be a shadow of its former self now that the Census Bureau has decided not to use it for any actual census-taking, but that doesn’t mean it can hang its head in shame forever, and it’s now popped up to make an encore appearance at the FCC. Thankfully, this time around the FCC folks have snapped plenty of pics of the device, including a look at its innards, which you can find at the link below. Otherwise, the device appears to be mostly unchanged, with it still boasting the same fingerprint security, and EVDO and WiFi connectivity, albeit without any voice capabilities. One of the few things getting changed, it seems, is the device’s battery — which, given recent developments, is likely one of the last upgrades it needed.
