2009 Kia cee’d gets Intelligent Stop & Go

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 by admin

Stop/start technology is like a trial membership for hybrids: it lets drivers in on the fuel savings and lower carbon emissions without forcing them to become a card-carrying member of the hybrid brigade. Kia is will be offering buyers just such an opportunity by introducing ISG, or Idle, Stop, and Go (also called Intelligent Stop & Go) on the new cee’d.

The ISG will be available on the 1.4- and 1.6-liter gasoline-engined c’eeds, and unlike other stop/start technology, this ISG shuts the engine down not only when the car is stopped, but when it’s moving less than four mph. To engage the ISG while the car is moving, the driver puts the car in neutral and depresses the clutch, the engine is shut down, and he or she will be rewarded with 15% better fuel economy in the urban cycle.

The frugal-ized cee’d also benefits from a lighter five-speed gearbox and low-rolling-resistance tires as standard fitment. Later in 2009, the 1.6-liter diesel c’eed will be offered with ISG technology.

Paris Preview: Kia cee’d Hybrid

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by admin

Kia’s will have at least two new tricks at the Paris Motor Show, one of them being the Kia Soul. The other will be a Kia cee’d gas-electric hybrid. Already available in coupe, 5-door hatch, and sportwagon variants, a hybrid addition based on the five-door would be a perfect addition to the line. So far, the only details we have is that the c’ee hybrid isn’t planned for sale until 2010, when it will join a train of new hybrids from other makers. Kia apparently decided that is when they’ll be able to sell enough of them to make a profit. But we will get the complete scoop on it at next week’s Paris Motor Show, so you won’t have to wait that long.

While Ford has enjoyed a year of exclusivity with its SYNC-branded version of Microsoft’s in-car connectivity technology, the Redmond-based company has been itching to expand the availability of its in-car gadget integration system to other marques. According to the AP, the first post-Ford carmakers to use the platform in the U.S. will be sister companies Hyundai and Kia.

According to the report, the Korean automakers will have the right to offer the technology on its cars in November, but probably won’t do so. The AP report quotes Velle Kolde, senior product manager for Microsoft Auto, saying the two companies are busy developing their own custom applications and don’t plan to be ready until after that date.

There is no word yet on what the new system will be named, its cost or what vehicles it will be offered on. Currently the only automaker offering Microsoft’s system in the U.S. is Ford. Fiat has rights to sell it internationally and calls its version Blue&Me.

UPDATE: Ford reminded us that only its version of Microsoft Auto’s technology is called SYNC, so other brands will have to come up with and market their own names for it.

This past February, just when it appeared that Kia had found its advertising footing, marketing VP Ian Beavis cleaned out his desk and followed Kia Motors America CEO Len Hunt out the door. Post-exodus, Beavis has landed at Carat, an advertising concern that’s part of the Aegis Group. The 54-year-old Beavis will fill the role of Executive Vice President for global client direction for Carat, and his past experience inside automakers such as Toyota, Ford, and Mitsubishi as well as time spent in high-powered agencies such as Foote, Cone & Belding, and Saatchi & Saatchi have led to glowing statements from higher-ups at the new digs. Carat does have some automotive clients among its customer ranks, and as marketing efforts continue to evolve, the firm’s grasp of media’s push beyond the traditional means of messaging should stand it in good stead. We hear Kia could use a witty campaign that gets people talking…
