The latest Bungie weekly update may not be packed to the brim with exciting things like upcoming playlists or talk of yet more new maps, but there are definitely some tasty morsels for Halo fans out there. First and foremost is a collection of some of the funniest Halo 3 screenshots out there. We’re particularly enamored of the one above. We have dubbed it “Cojones” for reasons that we don’t care to elucidate. Secondly, the update enumerates a few of the more interesting statistics about Halo 3. Our favorite is the number of people who have completed the Legendary campaign with every skull turned on. How many people have done this? Two. We can’t figure out if those two people are insanely good or insanely patient. Either way, they’re insane. Finally, the update points gamers to Ascendant Justice, a blog that has posted a three part series exploring the story revealed in Halo 3’s terminals. Fans of the series should definitely read it. Hit the “read” link to explore the entire update.

A new Xbox Live Arcade release is upon us, brothers and sisters. This vile temptation goes by the name of Wits and Wagers and it tempts our youth to succumb to the terrible sin of gambling. True, the abomination may be disguised as a simple trivia game, but close inspection reveals that the only way to win is to bet on the winning answer. Truly it is an evil game, and one that you should spurn as you would spurn a rabid dog.

But seriously, folks, Wits and Wagers is a trivia game and it’s available now for 800 Microsoft points. Oh, and Scene-It owners take note: it features support for the Big Button controller. It also make rather … interesting use of the Vision camera. Go grab the trial version and see what you think.

Lionhead community manager Sam Van Tilburgh must have been writhing from his recent wisdom teeth removal because he let it slip that something “big-ish” would be announced for Fable 2 next week.

“A lot is happening, if you are anxious to find out something new about Fable 2, I suggest you make sure you’ve got access to the internet, next week! Yes we are planning something (quite) big-ish.” Van Tilburgh wrote in an update on Lionhead’s community site.

While comments on the point theorize about possible features, we’d be happy for a release date confirmation.

Hey, remember those ridiculously high Grand Theft Auto IV sales estimates Chart-Track provided for the UK? It looks like they weren’t ridiculously high enough, as the final numbers have now been released. Sales for the first week of GTAIV availability in the UK reached a whopping 926,000 copies (approximately) with 631,000 being sold on the first day, handily topping the original day one estimate of 609,000. Of the 926,000 copies sold during the first week, 514,000 were for Xbox 360 with the remaining 413,000 going to the Playstation 3.

The game also managed to drive console sales, raising Xbox 360 sales by 125 percent and PS3 sales by 127 percent from the previous week. Perhaps most impressive of all, in its first week of sales GTAIV has already surpassed all but the top three UK titles of 2007 (FIFA 08, Brain Training, and Call of Duty 4). Just to clarify, that’s one week sales versus total sales for 2007. One last statistic: GTAIV is now the record holder for one week sales for a multiplatform game in the UK.

doom, doom-4, id, id-software

After a nearly four year hiatus, the Doom series is back. Id Software today announced that Doom 4 has officially begun production and that the company is looking for new talent to produce the sequel. Said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, “Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth.” Right now that’s all we know. No platforms have been announced but, given the franchise’s history, we’d expect it to show up on the 360 in some form.

Those looking to scratch that Doom itch while we wait for more info may want to check out the new series of Doom 3 novels. The first in a planned trilogy, Worlds on Fire, is actually pretty decent (yeah, we were surprised too).
