The Helio Heat

QWERTY fans need not apply — your phone hasn’t quite hit yet — but folks in search of a slick-lookin’ little slider on Helio have another solid choice. Just like its big sib, the Drift, the Heat comes to Helio courtesy of Samsung, but gains touch-sensitive controls and a lower price point. The new model serves up Bluetooth, 136MB of internal memory (though no external — advantage Drift), 1.3 megapixel cam, Helio Music compatibility, and the full suite of GPS goodies including Google Maps and Helio’s “Buddy Beacon” service atop a 2-inch QVGA display.

Look for the Heat to go on sale today for $150 in your choice of Gold and the always-fashionable “Onyx” (alias “black”). Follow the break for a shot of the Heat doing its slide thing in both shades!

Hands-on with Helio’s hot hot Heat

features, hands-on, heat

This Heat showed up at our doorstep today (that’d be the phone, not the post-punk band), and we have to say, we’re swooning. We’re a little bummed the Heat doesn’t have a memory card slot, but that excepted, this is by far our favorite Helio phone to date. It’s strange that this is positioned as lower end than the Drift, but that’s cool, you can save a little cash and get a nicer phone that’s even a little smaller. Enjoy the eye candy in our hands-on gallery.

Samsung’s SPH-W2500 slider with HSDPA

We’re noticing a trend — anyone think this thing looks like a healthy portion of the sliders Samsung has loosed in recent history? Sure, 13.8 millimeters is nice for a slider and all, but it’s by no means groundbreaking; same goes for the 2 megapixel primary and VGA front-facing cameras, microSD slot, and media support. That being said, we’re hard-pressed to dis any 3G phone that’s managed to make it all the way to the FCC’s hallowed halls, so we’re going to cut the criticism right here and cross our fingers for an expedient arrival on US shores.

Survey gives more Google phone clues?

Yes, this would be pretty easy to fake — and even if it’s real, it’s just a survey, which means it’s sorta fake by design — but a questionnaire allegedly received by a Mobileburn forum member hints at specs and a rather fascinating concept design for Google’s probably-in-the-works cellphone. Everything seems believable enough, though it seems like they flip-open QWERTY keypad could be a bit tricky to access from the right side thanks to the permanently-affixed nav buttons; features are said to include 3G data, WiFi, and a 2 megapixel camera, not to mention a rather striking Samsung-penned chassis. Typical test-marketing survey mumbo jumbo suggests that the phone would offer “all the exciting Google services from the PC” and — thanks largely to targeted advertising — affordable (as it’s been suggested) flat-rate data service and a three-month trial. Could it be that Apple’s going to see a legitimate competitor in the “pretty, giant-screened cellphone with tight Google integration” market right out of the gate (and with 3G, no less)?

Samsung’s F200 music phone stays slim and trim

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by admin

f200, music, music phone, MusicPhone

Your options for a slim music phone are nearly limitless, and if you dig the sliders of the world, you’ve probably eyed Samsung’s X830 a time or two before. The handset has apparently went over fairly well, as now we’re seeing a very similar successor hit the market with a trimmed down feature set. The F200 touts the same elongated design, a 1.46-inch 220 x 128 resolution external display, support for MP3, WMA, OGG, DCF, and SMP file formats, and a paltry 5MB of internal storage versus the 1GB found on the X830. Thankfully, Samsung included a microSD slot for toting more than a tenth of an album at any given time, and you’ll also find a hold switch and headphone jack to compliment the musical abilities. Per usual, there’s no word just yet when this sucka will hit the market nor how much it’ll run you when it does, but judging by the lackluster feature set, it’ll shouldn’t hurt too bad. Telus adds Samsung u510, white Motorola KRZR

We feel like we can barely tell the difference between the white KRZR from Moto and the original gray — especially if you squint your eyes a bit — but choice is always good nonetheless, and to that end Telus has added the paler variant to its lineup. Going toe to toe with the K1m in the high-fashion game, Samsung’s u510 has also found its way onto the CDMA carrier (look familiar?) with a 220 x 176 display, 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot — something its Helio doppelganger lacks — and touch-sensitive controls. Grab your white KRZR for the same price as its grayer counterpart, $149 CDN — or a u510 for $50 CDN less, $100, both on a three-year agreement.

[Thanks, Jay]

Samsung’s SGH-P110: D307 redux for AT&T? Please?

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by admin

samsung-p110-cebit.jpg

Pure speculation on our part here, but doesn’t it make sense? The U740 is getting a heck of a lot of love from the Verizon camp these days, after all. Since Cingular was the first to take a chance on the form factor, we reckon it only makes sense that we might see this (or something very much like it) on AT&T down the road — especially considering how far the concept has come from the forgettable D307. The P110, first mentioned at 3GSM last month, is quite a looker with a display that can be rotated in a ridiculous number of ways; features include a VGA camera, Bluetooth 2.0, and A2DP support. Plenty to love over the older D307, though that ugly tri-band radio is going to have to get patched up if we expect to see it stateside.
