Dr. seuss
Today is the day for your kids (and many adults) to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Elementary schools across the United States will be serving (of course) green eggs and ham for lunch and having read-ins of such favorites such as Cat in the Hat.
We’re big fans of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish too ~ and we have the pjs to prove it.
Whodathunk it? Green Eggs and Ham is the #4 top selling book on the children’s hardcover book list as compiled by Publisher’s Weekly. That translates into over 8 million books. Not too bad for a book that only uses fifty different words in it.
Do you need more evidence how deeply Dr. Seuss has touched our culture? In 2007 Judge James Muirhead invoked his inner Dr. Seuss after receiving a hard-boiled egg from a prisoner complaining about the food at the prison. Ordering the egg destroyed, Judge Muirhead wrote:
“”I do not like eggs in the file. I do not like them in any style. I will not take them fried or boiled. I will not take them poached or broiled. I will not take them soft or scrambled/Despite an argument well-rambled. No fan I am/Of the egg at hand. Destroy that egg! Today! Today! Today I say! Without delay!”
With the amount of money businesses spend in remedial training in reading and math for its employees (some sources claim as much as $60 billion a year), it’s great to see children of all ages reading these books. It’s a wonderful start down the road to literacy. What a great legacy.

I love my job, I love the pay!
I love it more and more each day.
I love my boss; he’s the best!
I love his boss and all the rest.
I love my office and its location -
I hate to have to go on vacation.
I love my furniture, drab and gray,
And the paper that piles up every day!
I love my chair in my padded cell!
There’s nothing else I love so well.
I love to work among my peers -
I love their leers and jeers and sneers.
I love my computer and all its software;
I hug it often though it doesn’t care …
I love each program and every file,
I try to understand once in a while!!
I’m happy to be here, I am, I am.
I’m the happiest slave of my uncle Sam.
I love this work. I love these chores.
I love the meetings with deadly bores.
I love my job - I’ll say it again -
I even love these friendly men -
These men who’ve come to visit today
In lovely white coats to take me away!!!
