Man says body kept on ice in Calif. hotel room ‘for religious reasons

Police are trying to determine why a drug suspect was storing a woman’s body in an ice-filled chest in his room at a swanky hotel in Newport Beach, Calif., the Orange County Register reports.

Stephen Royds, 46, gave a cryptic response to a reporter who tried to interview him at the county jail, where he is being held on drug charges. “Everything that happened was for religious reasons,” Royds told the Register reporter four times.

Detectives found the fully clothed body of Monique Trepp, 33, late Thursday when they searched room No. 966 at a fancy hotel near John Wayne Airport. The Register says they also found “dilapidated porch swings, a box of toy night-vision goggles and magnum-sized bottles of sake that had lamp sockets stuffed in their spouts.”

Local media report that Royds hasn’t been implicated in the woman’s death. Dan Akin, an official at the coroner’s office, tells KNBC-TV that the initial autopsy was “inconclusive” but the cause of death is not thought to be homicide.

“It’s very odd,” police spokesman Sgt. Evan Sailor tells the Los Angeles Times. “It’s not normal; it’s a little weird.”
