Robocar 2057 – Visualizing smart cars for a robotic future

What would the cars of future look like? May be like robots! This is what the design challenge at the Los Angeles auto show reveals to us. Robocar 2057 is the theme of the fourth edition of an event created by famed designer Chuck Pelly. During the design competition, the mundane constraints like marketability, fuel economy, and safety were thrown to the dustbin and the only thing that emerged out was designers’ imposing imaginations. The cars exist on PCs or paper only and look to be highly inspired from Transformers. No one knows if we will ever see these concepts on the roads, but these robotic automobiles do look mesmerizing.Nissan’s OneOne is a pet robot, which is designed to carry children to school and play with them as well.

Toyota’s Biomobile Mecha is intended to run on pollution extracted from the air and has nanolaser wheels. Biomimicry allows it to expand and contract to fit almost any available space.

The MotoNari RX is the Mazda of the future and is named after the warrior who founded Hiroshima, the company’s home city. The robotic car is controlled with a skintight suit of sensors.

The Volkswagen of 2057 has been named SlipStream, which is a gleaming personal pod that looks like an upright vacuum cleaner.

The Mercedes-Benz of 2057 is named SilverFlow, which can melt down and can be later re-assembled with magnetic fields.

The Honda 1 4 (one to the power of four) offers easy car-pooling by combining not just riders but sections of a car into a single unit suitable for the H.O.V. (high occupancy vehicle) lane.

The OnStar Ant from GM is themed on ubiquitous mobility and comes in bunches and arranges itself in many ways with the help of flocking and herding software. Its theme is ubiquitous mobility.

Strikingly, the Future Audis will look like whatever you want them to be, say a spaceship or whatsoever.The show opens to the public on Friday and runs through Nov. 25 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In the meantime, you can check the cute concept cars of the Tokyo Motor Show.
