Obama picks worst car ever to come out of Motown

There can be absolutely no doubt that Detroit automakers created some horrendous products over the years. The ’70s was a particularly low point, as the Big 3 struggled to cope with new safety, emissions and fuel economy standards. This past weekend, U.S. Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama was pontificating as politicians are wont to do, and he declared to an Indianappolis radio station that the car in which he learned to drive, a Ford Granada, was the worst car ever to emerge from Motown. The 1975-82 Ford Granada was an absolutely awful car from its baroque styling to its awful build quality. As I entered college in the mid-’80s, I was looking for a used car and a friend’s dad had a ‘79 Granada for sale. I took it for a test drive and after the high beam switch went through the rust hole in the floor, I determined that even $750 was way too much for this hunk. As bad as the Granada was, in an era of Pacers, Cordobas, Vegas and Ford’s own Mustang II, can we truly call the Granada the worst of all? You tell us in the comments.

Zipcar-driving voters in Philly choose Obama

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 by admin

barack-obama, car-sharing, hillary-clinton, john-mccain, zipcar, zipcar-car-sharing

Not quite sure what to make of this, but on a day when America’s political eye is turned to Pennsylvania, Zipcar would like us all to know that the car-sharing company took a weeklong poll of Zipcar members in Philadelphia and found that Barack Obama was the runaway winner with 59 percent of the “vote.” Hillary Clinton came in second with 25 percent and John McCain trailed with 16 percent. Of course, the “votes” were not simple “who do you like best?” questions but instead were taken from registrations of three vehicles: Honda Hillary, Mini Cooper McCain or BMW Barack. The number of hours each of these vehicles was reserved during the week counted towards the final score. Scientific? No. Accurate? No. Fun? Sure, why not. More details after the break.

Press Release:

Zipcar Pres. Poll Results: Obama Rolling in Philly

PHILADELPHIA, April 18 /PRNewswire/ — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama rolled to victory in the “Zipcar Presidential Poll,” which closed today at noon. Zipcar, the world’s largest car sharing company, conducted the weeklong poll of its members as a way to gauge its members’ interest in the three main presidential candidates.

The final tally of the poll is:

Barack Obama (D) 59%
Hillary Clinton (D) 25%
John McCain (R) 16%

The highly anticipated Pennsylvania primary is Tuesday, April 22.

Zipcar members “voted” in the poll by reserving the Zipcar vehicle of their choice — Honda Hillary, Mini Cooper McCain or BMW Barack. The results were obtained by tabulating the hours reserved for each vehicle over the course of the seven day poll.

Zipcar has 200,000 members in 50 cities across the U.S., Canada and London, with 5,000 cars in the fleet. Zipcar offers many benefits to its members including no per-mile fee and the industry’s best mobile reservation system. The company delivers cars-on-demand — so customers can reserve cars online or with their cell phones in seconds. In addition, due to recent rise in gas prices, Zipcar has lowered the price of the Toyota Prius and is offering 20 to Philadelphia residents at $6 per hour. This move makes Zipcar the best deal in car sharing citywide.

Obama suggests Clinton show tax returns

Monday, March 3rd, 2008 by admin

NEW ORLEANS - Democrat Barack Obama suggested Thursday that Hillary Rodham Clinton follow his lead and release her and her husband’s income tax returns so the public can see where the $5 million she loaned her presidential campaign came from.
A day earlier, Clinton acknowledged that she had made the loan late last month. At the time, Obama was raising and spending more money than her heading into the round of presidential primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday.

Asked whether he would call on the Clintons to release their tax returns, Obama stopped short of saying they should.

“I’ll just say that I’ve released my tax returns. That’s been a policy I’ve maintained consistently. I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from. But I’ll leave it up to you guys to chase it down,” he told reporters on the flight to Omaha, Neb., for a rally.

“I’ve disclosed my income tax returns,” he said. “I think we set the bar in terms of transparency and disclosure that has been a consistent theme of my campaign and my career in politics.”

There was no immediate comment from Clinton’s campaign.

Obama noted that Clinton is wealthier than he is. Asked whether he would rule out tapping his personal funds to pay for his presidential campaign, he said, “I don’t have enough money to drop $5 million into a campaign.”

Clinton’s financial disclosures, which reveal only broad ranges of assets, place her and former President Clinton’s wealth between $10 million to $50 million.

Obama released tax documents last year showing income of more than $991,000 for him and his wife, Michelle. The figure included his Senate salary as well as her income as an administrator of the University of Chicago Hospitals.
