Nary two months after the Tesla Roadster finally hit production, the automaker’s first dealership has swung its doors wide open. Not surprisingly, the establishment is planted in gridlock heaven, better known as Los Angeles, California. Even less shocking is the fact that it opened at one of the busiest intersections in the city — near the practically useless (we kid… sort of) 405 freeway and the always-packed corner of Santa Monica and Sepulveda boulevards. Of course, the 10,000-square-foot dealership isn’t exactly rolling cars off of the showroom floor just yet (something about a lingering transmission issue), but it’s hoping the $2 million cost of construction more than pays itself off in a couple of years. And if you’re hankering for a Telsa Motors store near you, you can look forward to others popping up in Menlo Park (CA), New York, Miami, Seattle and Chicago in the next year or so.

Porsche-o-philes Alert: CAR celebrates 60-years of Stuttgart’s finest

Every time we hit up our local newsstand, ten minutes is inevitably spent flipping through the automotive masterwork known as Car. Unfortunately, we have a hard time justifying the exorbitant price tag, so it’s a rare occasion when we walk up to the register and plunk down our hard-earned $10.95. But when the August 2008 issue hits the shelves, it’s coming home.

Car is doing a 60-year retrospective on Porsche, looking back on the storied marque from Stuttgart to attempt to find the ultimate model to wear the crest. Thankfully, the cash-strapped among us can join in the fun. Car is running dozens of features on its website that correlate with its print issue, including new and archived reviews, stories of Porsche’s racing triumphs and videos, plus one absolutely addictive game that’s kept Editor Neff sated while recovering from another trip to the dentist.

Naturally, no Car-created retrospective could be complete without stunning photography to match the mag’s pithy prose. We’ve assembled a small gallery of some of our favorite pics from the website, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t go to Car Online to enjoy the features first hand.

Fisker Karma hybrid sports car to generate motor noise through external speakers

You know how we love the electric cars around here, but internal combustion sure does sound sexy — a big V-8 literally brings the noise in a way the nearly-silent whir of an electric motor can’t hope to match. Well, it looks like the mad geniuses behind the $80,000 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid have hit upon an appropriately high-tech solution: speakers placed inside and out that allow drivers to give their rides any sound they want, including one described as “like something between a Formula One car and a jet plane.” Interesting, to be sure — but seeing as the Karma can hit 125mph and go from 0-60 in six seconds, we’d be happier if that rig just screamed at people to get out of the left lane.

Nokia Bluetooth Display Car Kit

The Nokia CK-15W Bluetooth Display Car Kit allows drivers to conveniently make and take calls in style while on the road. This novel car kit consists of a clear 2.2 inch, clear display screen where you can view different phone menus from your car dashboard. The 200 x 170 pixel screen allows for a more clearer view of the phone menu that makes it easy to read while driving. The large screen gives the driver a good overview of key functions that makes calling more convenient even while driving a car. The car kit display’s background color and theme can also be adjusted and personalized to match up with the car’s interiors and personal preference.

The wireless Bluetooth connection linking your phone to the car kit makes it possible for drivers with the eye on the road to browse through the phone menu even with the actual phone on their pocket. Handsfree communication is made even more convenient with a separate input device that is installed in the car, usually close to the user’s hand. The audio quality of the car kit is also quite good to allow a clear voice from the other line when making or taking calls.
