Rumormill: Dodge Challenger SS Drag package weeks away

Just like in the ’60s, some people will take their new 2008 Dodge Challengers to the drags. Chrysler is reportedly ready to make this very easy for new Challenger owners. Allpar is reporting that within a few weeks, there will issue forth from Chrysler a Super Stock special version of the Challenger. The intended application is Stock Eliminator drag racing, and the cars get their own VINs and lots of lightening. Powering drivers down the strip will be versions of the Hemi and 5.9 liter Magnum V8s, twisting through manual or automatic boxes.

Jettisoning things like wipers, HVAC, sound deadening and seats make for a Challenger that’s definitely not road-ready, but much lighter for track applications. 800 pounds have reportedly been trimmed out of the car through the omission of equipment and special composite body parts. Mechanicals have been modified to better suit the use, too. The main body unit gets tweaks, and the front crossmember is modified to a drop-out unit. Front brakes are largely unnecessary when the nose is in the air for part of the run, so lightweight units have been fitted. The fascia support and cooling system also get the slim-fast treatment. More information will supposedly arrive soon, but a 1,320-pounding neo-E body pony car appears close at hand.

Gibson intros SG Robot Guitar, new edition of Les Paul version

Last time we saw the Gibson Robot Guitar it was in the hands of Yngwie Malmsteen, who was laying down gorgeous, undulating waves of pure classical-metal fever. The first version of the self-tuning Les Paul was a rather limited edition, but now Gibson is sharing the wealth by introducing two more widely available models. The guitar-maker will issue the original iteration of the axe, but it will now be joined by Gibson’s other familiar face, the SG. Both models will apparently be available in a funky, purple-metallic finish (which we suspect only Prince could truly love), and will go on sale for a “limited time” — though Gibson hasn’t said what the cutoff will be. So, if you’ve got $3,999 for the Les Paul, or $3,599 for the SG, now might be the time to buy.

The SEAT Leon Supercopa series that visits tracks in seven European countries is, according to SEAT, “the most powerful single-brand competition in Europe.” In celebration of the series, Seat is making a special edition SEAT Leon Copa Edition that arguably looks even hotter than the race car.

The 2007 race car had a turbocharged inline 4 with 301 horsepower. The special edition version for the street gets the 2.0-liter TFSI, putting out 285 hp and 265 lb-ft. That means you get sixteen fewer chevaux than the race car, but fourteen more pounds of churn. With Eibach springs, bigger brakes, a SEAT Sport bodykit and 18″ wheels, the package is good for a 5.9-second run to 62-MPH. If you want one, you’ll need to scrounge up €38,500, and you’ll need to hurry: SEAT is only making 55 of them. Oh, and you’ll need to live in Europe, too.

If you are interested in a global positioning system device but not the steep price that comes with it, the TomTom One 3rd Edition GPS is a good choice. Costing about $249, this entry-level GPS device has all the good things from its predecessor TomTom One, but adds a Map Share technology and a “Help Me” safety feature.Map Share allows the user to make adjustments to the maps such as noting which roads are blocked, adding new streets, and so on. This information can also be shared with other drivers by uploading your saved map with the TomTom Home Desktop companion.

Meanwhile, the Help Me safety feature informs the user where to find the nearest police station, hospital, or car service center, all based on the current location. Although it does not come with a text-to-speech functionality, it does come with a voice-guided turn-by-turn directions as well as a 3.5-inch touch screen.
