Fiat to unveil Bugster concept in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 by admin

South America is a vital market for Fiat, and with the Sao Paulo International Auto Show coming up, the Italian automaker’s Brazilian subsidiary has cooked up an intriguing concept. Called the Bugster, it looks like the love child from a grappa-induced affair between a KTM X-Bow and a Jeep Wrangler.

Few details are known at this point, save to say that its green color isn’t accidental. Its undisclosed powertrain is good for zero-emission transportation, and the body panels (if you could call them that) are made out of renewable natural fibers. More details are bound to surface as the Sao Paulo show nears its opening at the end of this month.

Rendered Speculation: Abarth Coupe ala Autocar

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 by admin

Autocar has cooked up the latest rendering of the forthcoming Abarth Roadster, and while it keeps the basic shape of previous images, it adds a more distinct Fiat flavor to the front.

The Roadster will form one prong of Abarth’s three-model lineup, joining the Punto and 500 variants, but will be based off a new platform, complete with an engine mated amidships, shared by a new Fiat Group vehicle, likely the Lancia Fulvietta.

Power is expected to come courtesy of the 500 Abarth’s turbocharged 1.4-liter, putting 135-150 hp to the rear wheels. Sales are likely to begin sometime in 2013 and the Abarth Roadster is expected to carry a sticker price of £12,000.

In addition to Nissan/Renault, Chrysler has been talking with Tata, Fiat

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 by admin

Bob Nardelli, Chrysler’s current CEO, has given his employees the closest thing to an admission as we are likely to see that the company has been in serious negotiations with other automakers regarding future product plans and possibly even mergers. As has been widely reported over the weekend, Chrysler has apparently had discussions with General Motors regarding a tie-up between the two automakers, and the rumormill is churning away with stories that GM isn’t the only suitor. Carlos Ghosn already has a history of merging automakers, and his Nissan/Renault partnership has naturally been recalled as a possible mate with Chrysler, as have Fiat and Tata Motors.

Remember that there’s nothing concrete here to report, just speculation. At this point, all we know is that Nardelli admits that there are “third parties who are interested in exploring future possibilities with Chrysler” and that “as the company evaluates strategic options to maximize core operations and leverage its assets, we engage in a dialogue with these parties.” Sounds pretty vague, wouldn’t you say? These talks can be routine or they could be much more. We’ll just have to keep an interested eye on the news.

Fiat creates special edition Fiat 500 Lupin III

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 by admin

If the song is true that “to everything, turn turn turn, there is a season, turn turn turn,” then we’re going to need a lot more seasons for the Fiat 500. In addition to versions by StudioTorino, Diesel and Abarth, not to mention a convertible and an F1-themed run of 12, Fiat is making a special edition 500 to celebrate the car’s appearance in the movie Lupin III: Green vs Red.

The Japanese anime film itself celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Lupin III series of movies, which began in 1979 when gentleman thief Lupin III used a yellow Fiat 500. While the film is out now on DVD, the special edition Fiat 500 in yellow livery and graced with Lupin’s image won’t come around until the latter half of 2009, and probably only in Japan. If Fiat keeps this up, it might just challenge the Ford Mustang for the title of Most Gratuitous Special Editions Differentiated by Inconsequential Details.

Fiat 500 by DIESEL on sale in Europe

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by admin

Starting today, Europeans will be able to order the Fiat 500 by DIESEL. Yes, we know the car’s already offered with a diesel, but we’re not referring to the MultiJet engine here. This is a two-year special run done in partnership with the Italian clothing company. This style exercise is supposed to transform the 500 into an ‘Urban Survival Vehicle.” Apparently, all that’s required for “urban survival” are some DIESEL logos, new trim on the bumpers and bodywork, exclusive wheels, three paint colors, and a dressed-up interior. 100-horsepower cars also get yellow brake calipers. Seeing as how 10,000 “by DIESEL” cars are planned, we have a feeling that the folks who really want one will find a way to get one. This isn’t exactly as limited as some other 500s we’ve seen lately. Thanks to A-rod for the heads-up.

Paris Preview: Fiat Abarth 500 esse esse revealed

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by admin

The first official images of the production Fiat 500 Abarth esseesse (SS) have made their way onto the Web and as suspected, it’s as racy as a hot hatch can get.

The esseesse is fitted with a full body kit consisting of a new front fascia, lower side skirts and a redesigned rear bumper housing a diffuser and pair of chrome exhaust tips, while 17-inch (?) wheels and a small spoiler round out the appearance package.

Inside, a set of bolstered buckets keep drivers planted in the bends and expect a revised IP, red trim and Abarth logos emblazoned into the dash. No engine specs have been released yet, but expect the turbocharged 1.4-liter to put around 160 hp through a six-speed manual before it reaches the front wheels through a Q2 Torsen C limited slip differential.

All the details will be revealed next week when we make the trek across the Atlantic to cover the Paris Motor Show. Stay tuned.

Pics & Details Aplenty: Iveco Campagnola

Thursday, September 18th, 2008 by admin

The Italians are great at making two kinds of automobiles: supercars and super-minis. Cars like the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and the Fiat 500 are at the top of their game, but they’re at complete opposite ends of the market. In between lies the bulk of the market, like mid-size hatchbacks, family sedans and sport-utes. The Fiat Group – which controls nearly the entire Italian automotive industry – is trying hard to break out of its shell and into everyone else’s with cars like the new Fiat Bravo, Maserati Quattroporte and this, the new Iveco Campagnola.

Okay, granted the Campagnola is not targeted towards mainstream buyers. But for a hard-core off-roader (or military procurement officer), Fiat’s truck subsidiary Iveco is now offering an alternative to the Land Rover Defender or Jeep Wrangler, only with some decidedly retro, premium touches. We brought you initial details on the Giugiaro-styled Campagnola just a few days ago, but now Iveco has released a whole new batch of high-resolution images and full details for your perusal. In brief, the Campagnola is based on the Massif, which Iveco launched just this past March, and is is powered by a 16-valve 3.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with variable-geometry turbocharger driving 176 horsepower through a locking differential and six-speed manual to all four wheels. It’s available only in green or beige, with matching steel rims and a fully outfitted cabin.

Paris Preview: Fiat Fiorino Qubo for the young folk

Saturday, September 13th, 2008 by admin

The new Fiat Fiorino Qubo is a new multi-purpose vehicle that looks a bit like Kermit the Frog with a massive under-bite. Judging from the photos supplied by Fiat, it’s a great vehicle for surfer dudes with hot girlfriends and families with dogs. Considering its got dual sliding doors and airy cockpit, we can imagine that the young guys and gals towards which it’s marketed can find plenty to do with the MPV. Think of it as a very Italian Honda Element. Anyway, there are some nice details here, including an interior with six possible seating configurations — all for a 13,000 euro starting price, which translates to about $18,500 in the States. Two engines are available, a 73-horse 1.4-liter gas-powered four and a 1.3-liter oil-burner with 75 horsepower along with a five-speed stick or six-speed “robotized” automatic. We expect to see the Qubo in person at the Paris Motor Show, soon after which folks in Europe will actually to get to buy one. Read the whole press release after the break and check out the gallery below to view more beautiful people having fun with the Qubo.

On the nautical ropes in the Fiat Portofino beach car

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 by admin

Fiat took one of its Fiorino vans, chopped off, well, several of it, and called it the Portofino. Supposedly no a good amount of as opposed to a news story for the Caravan Show such a starts in Dusseldorf later on such a week, the golden, buggy-like conveyance is an homage to the 1960s. In a cycle before Fiat was constructing $200,000 supercars, coachbuilders got putting in open-topped bodies to Fiat chassis desire that for fun in the Italian sun.

To trepidation the beachgoing theme, the Portofino has lumber laminate flooring and innate fibers treated in on a special waterproofing for the interior surfaces. The car can (optimistically) seat five, and the rear seat folds slumping for your surfboards and anchors.

Instead of doors, the Portofino has nautical ropes — that is able to sound risky, but the 12-foot car one and only has 75 horsepower, so you shouldn’t be going to get in too even trouble. Fiat has no plans to issue out the Portofino, but suggests it are able to put up a insured version for conservation from what i read in win and sun.

Fiat buys Zastava to build new Topolino microcar

If you told us a year ago that Fiat was going to sign a deal with the government of Serbia, we’d have laughed. But that was before the country announced that it was accepting tenders for investment in the state-owned automaker Zastava, makers of the famous Yugo (aka Skala 55). The process started back in December when the Serbian government made the announcement, sparking interest from various automakers. But even as recent as last week, the Fiat stance was that it was still considering the proposition. Well, it appears the Italian auto giant has done thinking, and has signed a memorandum of understanding with Serbia to establish a joint venture that involves Fiat investing a staggering 700 million euros (!) into Zastava’s manufacturing facilities in exchange for a majority stake in the company, known in full as Zavodi Crvena Zastava. The Serbian government, meanwhile, will contribute some 200 million euros through tax incentives and similar measures.Fiat has revealed that it will use the Zastava plant to produce the upcoming Topolino microcar. The vehicle will be based on the same platform as the 500 and Panda, but even smaller and positioned below either model, and share the same name as the concept car that previewed the new 500 and originally used on the 1936 runabout pictured above. According to reports, the new Topolino will be a compact two-seater measuring just 3150mm (124 inches) in length, slightly longer than the Smart ForTwo at 2692mm (106 inches). A four-seater version is expected to follow, in addition to an upscale version for the Lancia division.
