YouTube headquarters in San BrunoYouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips. YouTube was created in mid-February 2005 by three former PayPal employees.[1] The San Bruno-based service uses Adobe Flash technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur content such as videoblogging and short original videos. In October 2006, Google Inc. announced that it had reached a deal to acquire the company for US$1.65 billion in Google stock. The deal closed on November 13, 2006.[2]

Unregistered users can watch most videos on the site, while registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos. Some videos are available only to users of age 18 or older (e.g. videos containing potentially offensive content). The uploading of videos containing pornography, nudity, defamation, harassment, commercial advertisements and material encouraging criminal conduct is prohibited. Related videos, determined by title and tags, appear onscreen to the right of a given video. In YouTube’s second year, functions were added to enhance user ability to post video ‘responses’ and subscribe to content feeds.

Few statistics are publicly available regarding the number of videos on YouTube. However, in July 2006, the company revealed that more than 100 million videos were being watched every day, and 2.5 billion videos were watched in June 2006. 50,000 videos were being added per day in May 2006, and this increased to 65,000 by July.[3] In January 2008 alone, nearly 79 million users watched over 3 billion videos on YouTube.[4]

In August 2006, The Wall Street Journal published an article revealing that YouTube was hosting about 6.1 million videos (requiring about 45 terabytes of storage space), and had about 500,000 user accounts.[5] As of April 9, 2008, a YouTube search returns about 83.4 million videos and 3.75 million user channels.[6][7]

YouTube is currently not profitable, with its revenues being noted as “immaterial” by Google in a regulatory filing.[4] Its bandwidth costs are estimated at approximately $1 million a day.[4] It is estimated that in 2007, YouTube consumed as much bandwidth as the entire Internet in 2000. [8]

Bioware devs debate whether Wii is part of gaming

CEO Ray Muzyka and President Greg Zeschuk of Bioware, a company founded on narrative-centric RPGs, can’t seem to decide if the Wii is a game (as opposed to, from what we gather, a toy). In an interview with GameDaily, Zeschuk said, “If gaming is defined by story, then generally Wii may not be,” though he immediately expands on that, “The game [4 to 5 people together are] playing is actually very different than the rest of us. What they’re doing as a company is like a different flavor.”

Providing a counterpoint, Muzyaka noted that the Wii experience is “more toy-like” but also said, “there’s also a narrative between the players outside the game and kind of fulfills the same things games do. Games are ‘toys’ in the sense that they’re fun.” Warren Spector had made a similar designation in an Escapist piece last year, categorizing games like Tetris and Madden akin as “retold” narratives. The above is a rather bare-bones highlight of their discussion, so check out the full interview for more.

So much for the naysayers, huh? Although the hotly-anticipated Pandora is still doing its thang without a case in the most recent videos, the dev board is definitely handling the FinalBurn Alpha arcade emulator and MPlayer video viewer with ease. Yeah, we’re still clueless about a definitive launch date, but feel free to hit the read link for a couple of clips sure to get you even more anxious for this thing’s arrival.

iPhone, SDK ,download,s, exceed ,100,000, upcoming, games ,ge,t outed

Just four days after Apple announced that the beta version of the iPhone SDK would be available to developers, some 100,000 downloads have taken place. ‘Course, it’s not like we’re shocked by Cupertino’s latest horn tooting, but we’ve all ideas that number pales in comparison to the amount of requests for unlocks. Nevertheless, the real news from the Apple camp is that companies such as Namco and PopCap are apparently on board to bring titles such as Pac-man, Galaga, Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle to the iPod touch / iPhone via App Store. Furthermore, Six Apart’s CEO admitted that it’s already developing a “native iPhone application for TypePad,” and the VP of THQ Wireless implied that we’d be seeing some of its wares surface here as well. As for release dates? Your guess is as good as ours.

The Games for Windows logo is the initiative of Microsoft to standardize the gaming platform with the aim of making video gaming on Windows operating systems easier and more accessible to users than before, similar to what popular game consoles have done. There are now several game titles released under the Games for Windows logo which have become popular among many PC users. Here are five of the most popular titles to date:

Bioshock

This game is a first person shooter game that allows the gamer to turn everything into a weapon. In the game, players may be able to modify their body with plasmids, upgrade weapons and make new variants of different ammunition.

Players can also hack into systems and control or even reprogram enemy robots to become allies or render enemy weapons useless. The game play makes use of a fresh idea that is unlike any other found in current genres. The story outline itself is interesting and captivating enough to lure players to explore and discover the game levels all the more.

Crysis

Crysis is a game set on Earth in the year 2019. It is a “humans vs. aliens” game that has players fight through different earth landscapes as well as enemies along the way in order to get to the heart of the alien ship for the ultimate battle. This game contains an interesting storyline that has the player working to repel an alien invasion and save humankind.

Shadowrun
