2012 Volkswagen Golf expected to shed pounds

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 by admin

These days, when discussions turn towards the cars we’ll be driving a few years from now, efficiency and emissions are two unavoidable topics. Such is the case with the next-next generation of the VW Golf, following the sixth iteration that will hit European dealerships later this year. So, what will the seventh version have in store for us? Smaller engines and a smaller structure. For the last few decades, every succeeding redesign was just a bit bigger and more powerful that its predecessor. Expect that trend to end with the Mk VII Golf. You can bet that diesels will account for a larger percentage of sales too, possibly even in the States.

Just when are we likely to see Golf v7.0? Rumors point to 2012, but VeeDub is keeping quiet. What they do admit to, however, is working on it as you read this.

Next VW GTI puts out 210 hp, R version gets AWD and 270 hp

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by admin

Volkswagen’s high-performance plans for the new Golf will spawn three new models, beginning with the new 210 hp GTI set to debut in Paris and go on sale in the middle of 2009. According to Automotive News, the Mk. VI GTI will sprint to 60 in a tick above seven seconds and hit a top speed of around 150 mph.

A performance-oriented diesel Golf, dubbed the GTD, will hit the market in April, putting out around 170 hp from its common-rail diesel, while a range-topping R model, available through Volkswagen Individual, will be churn out 270 hp, send power to all four wheels and will be equipped with an aero package that includes a “black gleaming diffuser.” Sales of the R version will begin in November of 2009.

VW unveils 74 mpg Golf BlueMotion Concept

Monday, September 8th, 2008 by admin

Debuting in concept form today is the most fuel efficient and cleanest version of Volkswagen’s sixth-generation Golf. Wearing the BlueMotion badge, as is common for VeeDubs with fuel-saving tweaks, the new Golf is able to complete the European driving cycle mileage tests with a rather epic 74 miles per gallon (around 62 mpg in the U.S. if conversions can be trusted). For those who like to keep track of such things, that’s just 99g/km of carbon emissions and an excellent score by any measure. In order to achieve such low fuel consumption and emissions, the Golf BlueMotion is bestowed with a miserly 1.6-liter TDI common rail diesel engine that kicks out 105 horses and 184 lbs.-ft. of torque at a low 2,000 rpm. Low rolling resistance tires, aero tweaks and revised gearing all help the cause. Though still just a concept, there is little doubt that this model or one very similar will debut a few months after the the standard Golf in Europe next year. In the U.S.? Don’t hold your breath, though a Golf TDI sold in the States may happen eventually.

VW diesel-hybrid is DOA

The word came down yesterday from Auto Motor und Sport that the Volkswagen TDI hybrid Golf concept that debuted in Geneva wouldn’t make the transition to production. According to the print edition of the German rag (translation courtesy of TTAC), the “forward-looking diesel-hybrid is already a thing of the past.” That came as a surprise considering how well the concept was received and rumblings we heard from VW’s people on the floor that the 69-mpg (European cycle) Golf was destined for the road. We shot off an email to a Volkswagen exec here in the States who responded by saying that, “It was just a concept. No plans to produce were announced.” Too bad. Guess we’ll have to make due with the gasoline-hybrid Golf that’s due out in the next few years.[Source: Auto Motor und Sport via TTAC]

Are you a fan of the professional golfing scene, but wish that Tiger Woods’ head was a tad more hydrocephalitic? Feel disappointed when your long drives aren’t punctuated with high-pitched squeals and rainbow trails? Whether you’re a soon to be fan or a returning wedge-wielder, we’re sure the news of a North American release date for the sequel to the PSP’s premier anime-inspired golf simulator, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee, will bring tears of joy to your dinner plate-sized, sparkle-filled eyes.

Sony recently confirmed that the game, appropriately titled Open Tee 2, will hit store shelves June 3, and will tout an 16-player online tournament mode (making up for the original game’s complete lack of online support) and an 8-player ad-hoc match play mode. If you’ve never been exposed to Clap Hanz’ peculiar take on the ancient sport, you can get the full version of Open Tee the first on the Playstation Store for $10.99 — a mere fraction of the cost to hit the big boy links, and without all that pesky walking.

Car company sponsorships “clicking” with golfers

Buick, Cadillac, Golf, Masters, Mercedes, Tiger woods, TigerWoods

Golf can be a very expensive and exhaustingly difficult sport to play, but watching the pros makes hitting the dimpled little ball seem like child’s play. Pro golfers can have the same effect on the car buying process, as a recent study by Compete.com shows that web traffic for three sponsors of The Masters are getting a huge spike in site traffic in advance of the event. Mercedes, Cadillac, and Buick are pouring money into golf, and at least online the strategy is paying off. This is especially true for Buick, which has the one and only Tiger Woods as its pitchman.

Golf lovers are five times more likely to visit a Buick website than the average consumer and two to three times more likely to visit a Mercedes or Cadillac site. We’re no marketing experts, but if those numbers hold up, that’s an impressive return for the automakers marketing dollar. It’ll be interesting to see if the up-tick in online interest will spur sales for Buick, Mercedes, and Cadillac in the month of April. The chart above shows web traffic in the months before The Masters, which begins April 10. Thanks for the tip, Eric!
