.es, Spain’s ccTLD, is well on the way to its one millionth registration and will pass the nine hundred thousandth domain registration this month. It is expected the one millionth registration will occur in May.
Registrations have soared from around 85,000 at the end of 2005 to almost 300,000 in December 2006, almost 508,000 in 2006 and 805,000 at the end of 2007.

The liberalising of .es registration requirements is the main reason for the rapid increase in registrations, as well as.es becoming the equivalent of .com for the Spanish-speaking world.
