Bush Criticizes New Cuban Leader

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

“Until there is a change of heart and a change of compassion and a change of how the Cuban government treats its people, there’s no change at all,” Bush said at the State Department to the Council of Americas, a business group that advocates for democracy and open markets in the Western Hemisphere. “Cuba will not be a land of liberty so long as free expression is punished and free speech can take place only in hushed whispers and silent prayers. And Cuba will not become a place of prosperity just by easing restrictions on the sale of products that the average Cuban cannot afford.”

The White House also said Wednesday that the president spoke by videoconference this week with democratic activists in Cuba, an unprecedented move that may enrage the Castro government.

The developments are part of a stepped-up effort by Bush to talk about Cuba and press for political change since Fidel Castro officially stepped down in February after nearly a half-century ruling the island. Fidel’s brother, Raul, took over as president in the ailing leader’s place, and has unveiled a series of changes in Cuba since then, from raising salaries to dropping irritating limits on what Cubans can buy and sell.

For years, lawmakers of both parties have been trying to chip away at the United States’ Cold War-era trade, travel and home visit restrictions aimed at undermining a hostile government just 90 miles from U.S. shores. They contend the leadership change in Havana provides the opportunity to lift the embargo.

But Bush has stressed that a new Castro does not mean a new Cuba, and he did so again on Wednesday.

He said Cuba’s government must allow Cubans “to pick their own leaders in free and fair elections,” release all political prisoners and respect human rights “in word and deed.”

“This is the policy of the United States and it must not change until the people of Cuba are free,” the president said.

In the teleconference that occurred Tuesday, Bush spoke with Martha Beatriz Roque, one of the 75 pro-democracy activists arrested in a 2003 crackdown for offenses against the Castro regime; Berta Soler, the wife of an activist still jailed for treason, and Jorge Luis Garcia Perez, who was released last year after 17 years in prison.

Some of what Bush heard echoed the challenges to his Cuba policy that he hears from some at home. Roque asked Bush to make it easier for Cuban Americans in the United States to visit family members on the island and send money to their relatives here.

The U.S. Interests Section in Havana, where the activists went to participate in the conference, did not say what, if anything, Bush said in response to Roque’s request. But his speech gave a clue that he’s not open to change in the current U.S. approach.

Also on the videoconference were Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. Rice and Gutierrez, a Cuban American who left the island with his parents at age 6, chair the White House Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba.

Rice once said the commission was created to “accelerate the demise of Castro’s tyranny.” The Castros have dismissed it as an effort to destabilize Cuban society.

The activists said Bush congratulated them on their bravery.

“He’s a president who leaves power in 10 months, but he’s the head of state closest to the Cuban people,” Soler told The Associated Press later. “He is one of the few presidents worrying about Cuba’s problems.”

It was the first time Bush has spoken directly to opposition leaders on the island, the U.S. Interests Section said. The use of U.S. property in Havana to facilitate the conversation won’t please Cuba’s government, which tolerates no organized opposition and dismisses dissidents as U.S.-paid mercenaries trying to topple the communist system.

In March, Bush met at the White House with a former Cuban prisoner and his wife to mark the five-year anniversary of the 2003 arrests.

Associated Press writer Andrea Rodriguez contributed to this story from Havana.

Registrars are preparing for the all new .ME Domain Extension

Monday, April 14th, 2008 by admin

Today the .ME registry announced that it has released the registration schedule for the all new .ME Domain Name extension. With the .ME domain, the Internet will, quite simply, be all about YOU. For the first time in Internet history, domain names are personal.

The .ME Registry (the d.b.a of doMEn, d.o.o.) was chosen by the government of Montenegro to operate the new .ME domain name extension. Registry services for .ME are provided by Afilias Global Registry Services (www.afilias.info) who supports over 13 million domain names worldwide including generic TLDs such as .INFO and .ORG.  More details about the sunrise and landrush periods below…

Official Timeline Announced for Catchy New Domain
Podgorica, Montenegro. (April 9, 2008) –.ME Registry officials today announced the roll-out plan for .ME, the new domain name extension. .ME is expected to be utilized as both a personalized Web address and as a catchy business marketing tool around the world.

The registry will begin accepting .ME applications in May, for the start of what is known as the General Sunrise Period, a time when only trademark owners can apply. However, registrars who sign up before that time can start accepting Sunrise and Landrush applications and pre-registration requests, as soon as they’d like. As was the case with .ASIA, multiple parties will be allowed to submit applications for the same domain name. Domain names that receive more than one application will go to an auction process.

“We believe .ME has incredible potential for Internet users worldwide,” said Predag Lesic, the registry’s executive director. “Think about it, with a .ME domain, the Internet will, quite simply, be all about YOU. For the first time in Internet history, domain names are essentially personal.”

.ME domains, with their universal appeal, are expected to be in high demand. So some “premium” names – including verb-oriented domains, such as “Contact.ME,” “Drive.ME” or “Fly.ME,” – will be held back for auction after Open Registration.

The .ME Landrush is targeted to begin in early June, with Open Registration commencing on a first-come, first-served basis in mid-July.  Two-year minimums are required on all .ME domain names registered during the Landrush and initial Open Registration periods.

The complete .ME roll-out schedule is as follows:

• May 6 to May 20: General Sunrise Period. During this time, anyone with a trademark is eligible to apply for a .ME domain.

• May 20 to June 6: Quiet Period. The registry will be closed to registrars. Sunrise auctions will begin for names that received multiple applications. .ME domain names that receive only one application will be awarded.

• June 6 to June 26: Landrush. This is the first opportunity for the public at large to apply. Anyone who doesn’t have a trademark, but is interested in a specific .ME domain, can apply during this period. This is also when Sunrise challenges begin.

• June 26 to July 15: Quiet Period. During this time, the registry is closed to registrars. Names for which there was only one application during the Landrush Period are allocated. Landrush auctions will begin for names that received multiple applications.

• July 17: Open Registration. Domain names are registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information, or to apply to be a .ME Registrar, visit: www.Domain.ME

About the .ME Registry:
.ME Registry (the d.b.a of doMEn, d.o.o.) was chosen by the government of Montenegro to operate the new .ME domain name extension. The domain extension will be available to the general public worldwide in mid-July. .ME Registry partners include ME-net, GoDaddy.com and Afilias Limited. Me-Net is located in Montenegro and its principles have been leaders in the ICT sector in Montenegro, including the privatization of its largest ISP. GoDaddy.com is located in the USA and is the world’s largest domain name registrar and the largest paid hosting provider in the world, according to Netcraft Ltd. Afilias Limited is headquartered in Ireland and is a leading registry services provider, supporting more than 13 million domains worldwide.

Gibson intros SG Robot Guitar, new edition of Les Paul version

Monday, April 14th, 2008 by admin

robot_guitars.jpg

Last time we saw the Gibson Robot Guitar it was in the hands of Yngwie Malmsteen, who was laying down gorgeous, undulating waves of pure classical-metal fever. The first version of the self-tuning Les Paul was a rather limited edition, but now Gibson is sharing the wealth by introducing two more widely available models. The guitar-maker will issue the original iteration of the axe, but it will now be joined by Gibson’s other familiar face, the SG. Both models will apparently be available in a funky, purple-metallic finish (which we suspect only Prince could truly love), and will go on sale for a “limited time” — though Gibson hasn’t said what the cutoff will be. So, if you’ve got $3,999 for the Les Paul, or $3,599 for the SG, now might be the time to buy.

New Nintendo DS coming at this year’s E3?

Monday, April 14th, 2008 by admin

dscake.jpg

According to reports (translated, possibly misunderstood, clearly speculative reports), come this year’s E3, Nintendo could be rolling out a brand-spanking-new DS — most likely very unlike the one pictured above. If you follow the text in a Bloomberg Japan article, Famicom magazine publisher Hirokazu Hamamura says that the timing of E3 would fall right in line with the two-year stagger the Big N has applied to other handheld releases. Of course, Nintendo is saying “no comment,” though we find that’s usually the last thing they say before introducing the Wii, Game Boy, N64, Harry Potter Wand, or Ultimate Doomsday Device.

Ferrari previously announced their One to One personalization program back at the Geneva Motor Show a few weeks ago and now it’s coming to North America. One to One is for those who just can’t settle for an “off the rack” Ferrari, as if there is such a thing, yet the program allows purchasers of the new 2008 612 Scaglietti to have their new toys tailored to their whims.

Beginning with the Park Avenue store in New York this week customers can work with a specialist to select the materials and accessories they want in their 612 to create a truly bespoke Italian exotic. Once the desired combinations have been chosen, the cars will be assembled in a dedicated corner of the Maranello factory. Along with the usual shrieking V-12, the latest edition of the 612 includes Ferrari’s new electrochromic roof and SuperFast electro-hydraulic shifted gearbox. If you have to ask the cost… just peruse the gallery and drool.

New York 2008: Nissan unveils 2009 Maxima with “liquid motion” sheetmetal

Sunday, April 6th, 2008 by admin

00_09maximalive_opt.jpg

Ever since Nissan took the Altima upmarket in both size and prize, the Maxima has suffered from an identity crisis. In the Nissan/Infiniti lineup, this premium front-wheel-drive sports sedan suffered a middle-child syndrome while slotted between the less-expensive yet still capable Altima and the more aspirational rear-wheel-drive Infiniti G35 sports sedan. Nissan hopes to give the Maxima a new voice in its crowded lineup of large sedans with the new 2009 model that comes in your choice of a 3.5 S or 3.5 SV trim. Clearly, it packs a visual punch.

The new design is something Nissan calls “Liquid Motion”. It’s dynamic, for sure, with peaks and valleys among flowing lines and sharp creases that combine to form a muscular shape. See a little of the last-gen Nissan Skyline GT-R in that grille? We do, and that’s not a bad thing, though the new wraparound L-shaped headlamps may not go over well with everyone. Despite the large front and rear overhangs, Nissan actually shrunk the Maxima’s length and wheelbase while widening its track. Call the design what you want, but it’s not derivative and the expressive flanks make it truly look like a four-door sports car.

New York 2008: The Ute has landed! Live Reveal of the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck [w/VIDEO]

Sunday, April 6th, 2008 by admin

01_pontiac_g8_t_450-op.jpg

Again with musical accompaniment from the Young Lords, Maximum Bob Lutz heralded the return of the El Camino Pontiac G8 Sport Truck to the U.S. market for the first time in over two decades. Joining Lutz to make the sales case for how wonderful the new G8 ST was Fifty Cent who the company claims is a loyal Pontiac owner. We’ve already heard all the specs on the new Ute, so we won’t bore you with them again here. Click to visit our previous post with all the deets. The platform is a longer wheelbase version of the one under the G8 sedan, and the suspension remains all-independent, although the rear end has been beefed up to provide some load carrying and towing capacity. This thing is no replacement for a Silverado in terms of capability, but for those that need to grab some bags of mulch from your local big box store or tow a pair of jet skis to the lake, the ST provides a much more car like ride and performance pretty close to the G8 GT sedan. The Sport Truck has the same 361-hp 6.0L V8 as the G8 sedan, along with the six-speed autobox through which 385 lb-ft of torque flow to the rear end. Sometime between now and late next year GM will announce what the real name of the ST, is but you can make your voice heard (whether anyone is actually listening is another story) at www.pontiac.com/namethiscar.

New York 2008: Pontiac unveils G8 GXP, featuring 50 Cent [w/VIDEO]

Sunday, April 6th, 2008 by admin

00_g8gxpny08_opt.jpg

It’s a rare occurrence when honest applause breaks out in a press conference over a new model, let alone a transmission. But that’s exactly what happened when Maximum Bob talked up the Pontiac G8 GXP, and specifically its optional six-speed manual transmission. Mated to that highly coveted cog swapper is the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 pulled from the Corvette, making 402 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. If you opt for the 6L80 auto ‘box, you can check your manhood and an extra two lb.-ft. of torque at the door.

In addition to the upgraded engine and manual tranny, the GXP benefits from the 19-inchers originally shown on the G8 concept, Brembo brakes (sized 14-inches up front and 12.76 inches out back) and some revised suspension bits. Zero-to-60 times are down to 4.7 seconds and the G8 GXP (along with the Solstice coupe and ‘ute) are all due to hit dealers later this year.

Pontiac’s full press release is posted after the jump, and our own live high-res shots can be seen in the gallery below (we’re going to be adding more as soon as the pandemonium surrounding the vehicle dies down.
