Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV landing in Europe in 2009? Too little, too late.

Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun reads the present afternoon the present Sony plans to turn over its 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV in Europe in 2009. That dovetails nicely amid a two-week old statement by a Sony representative who said, “I’d be really surprised if their hasn’t arrived in the UK by 2009.” Us too, in the wake of all, it is carried on on be purchased in Japan from the time December of 2007 and was just recently caught slumming the big box outlets in the US. It just turns out expected then, the current Sony can ramp generation to the rate which by 2009 properties would balance the minimal, European clamor for a $2,500-ish TV measuring clearly 11-inches — million:1 contrast or not. Still, it is all a bit late if you ask us (you did right?) seeing as how Sony plans to be giving medium to extensive OLED panels as the beginning of as April 2009.

Sony XEL-1 estimated to last customers only half as long as expected

Ruh roh. Research firm DisplaySearch has just unleashed a new report that takes an in-depth look at the ultrathin XEL-1, and it ended up finding a video lifetime barely half of what Sony promises. Apparently the company ran a couple of Sony’s OLED TVs for 1,000 hours, after which it found that blue luminance degraded by 12-percent, the red by 7-percent and the green by 8-percent. Extrapolating the data it gathered, it estimated that the unit would lose half of its brightness in 17,000 hours — Sony says you can expect 30,000. Of course, Sony is still standing by its numbers, and even we can see that DisplaySearch’s methods aren’t perfectly scientific, but if you were honestly expecting to watch this thing for the next decade (and not a year less), you may want to hit the read link and snoop around.

Room for one more? Panasonic wiggles into OLED TV game

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by admin

Alright, we get it. SED actually is not the wave of the future for televisions, but OLED most probably is. At present, we’ve got Sony, Toshiba, Samsung and LG Display (among others) all vying for your future dollars, and since competition in the HDTV space is so grand for consumers, we won’t be kvetching too much about yet another entrant. DigiTimes has it that Matsushita (parent company of Panasonic) is looking to begin production of OLED displays “in the future.” That’s it. No juicy clues as to when, no inside information about panel sizes — nothing. Just enough to tease you and leave you in a state of panic for the foreseeable future.

LG Display aiming to mass produce 32-inch OLED TVs in 2011

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by admin

Oh yeah, we’re mildly excited that LG Display should be able to start cranking out product from its 8G LCD plant earlier than expected, but the real kicker here is the outfit’s outlook on OLED. Merely two days after hearing that Samsung was hoping to dish out affordable medium-to-large OLED displays in 2009 / 2010, we’re now getting word that LG Display is looking to offer up a 32-incher the year after. And we’re talking “volume production,” no less. Makes holding off on that XEL-1 that much easier, doesn’t it? Nah, we didn’t really think so.

Samsung expects affordable medium to large OLED displays in 2009 / 2010

Remember Samsung’s 14- and 31-inch OLED panels on display at CES? With any luck, we’ll see them hitting assembly lines sometime in the next two years. Woo-Jong Lee, VP Marketing at Samsung SDI says that medium and large size displays like monitors, laptops, and TVs will get the OLED treatment in 2009 and 2010. Nothing we haven’t heard before. Still, given the group’s recent distractions it’s good to hear it again. Samsung is expected to achieve a production capacity of 3 million OLED panels in 2009 (double the current capacity) before hitting 6 million or so in 2010. That type of output should allow Samsung to start pushing down costs in ‘09 thanks to economies of scale — good news for consumers. They’d better hurry though; we’re this close to dropping $2,500 for Sony’s 11-inch XEL-1. Silly, we know, but you’d understand if you’ve ever seen the display.

Diesel looses two more OLED wristwatches

Late last year, Diesel popped out a pair of timepieces that featured a smallish OLED and lots of shine. This year, it’s the OLED sitting front and center. The DZ7076 and DZ7086 both ditch the heavy chrome look and head back to the basics, and there’s even four animations that do the OLED proud with the push of a button. Each watch also touts a genuine leather strap and the all-important Diesel logo, and while the DZ7076 can be yours for just $120, the slightly more retro DZ7086 will demand an extra $30.
