Samsung’s SGH-P110: D307 redux for AT&T? Please?

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by admin

samsung-p110-cebit.jpg

Pure speculation on our part here, but doesn’t it make sense? The U740 is getting a heck of a lot of love from the Verizon camp these days, after all. Since Cingular was the first to take a chance on the form factor, we reckon it only makes sense that we might see this (or something very much like it) on AT&T down the road — especially considering how far the concept has come from the forgettable D307. The P110, first mentioned at 3GSM last month, is quite a looker with a display that can be rotated in a ridiculous number of ways; features include a VGA camera, Bluetooth 2.0, and A2DP support. Plenty to love over the older D307, though that ugly tri-band radio is going to have to get patched up if we expect to see it stateside.

Nothing too exciting, but those with the Instinct high on their list of next mobile to own will surely find it worth the click over.

Samsung’s new SGH-P960 packs a DVR

Sunday, May 4th, 2008 by admin

-h, samsung, sgh-p960, slider

While some manufacturers stay home pouting about mobile TV’s slow uptake in Europe, Samsung isn’t giving up on the Euro DVB-H market just yet, hoping to entice viewers with better features. The company’s new SGH-P960 adds integrated DVR functionality, like pausing live TV when it rings, meaning you won’t miss any of the action on the slider’s 2.6-inch, 240 x 320 screen. Other TV niceties include picture-in-picture, an on-screen programming guide, and an integrated Bang & Olufsen amplifier. A 3 megapixel cam with LED flash on the back rounds out what sounds like a nice package, but with no word on price or availability outside of Europe it’s hard to get too excited.

Blue Wave 3 firmware update for Samsung P2 heads out of beta

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by admin

It’s already hit Korea, but it looks like those of us that don’t live in the land of Samsung can now finally get our hands on the official, non beta Blue Wave 3 firmware update for the company’s fan-favorite YP-P2 PMP as well. Otherwise known as version 4.13, the update brings a whole host of improvements, including a decent batch of new GUI themes, a new fullscreen playback mode, a calculator, and some additional brightness and speed controls for video playback, among other things. Of course, as Samsung is wont to do, it’s already teasing us with its Blue Wave 4 update, which promises to take the player to even greater heights with customizable skins, Bluetooth-based games, subway maps, and voice recording, to name just a few improvements. No word on a release for that just yet, however, so in the meantime you’ll have to make do with the next best thing available at the link below.

The rumors were true: Samsung and Sony have agreed to extend their S-LCD partnership in a $1.8B 8th-gen facility. The second 8th-gen facility — dubbed 8-2 — will begin pumping out glass from the South Korean city of Tangjeong in Q2 2009 in sheets up to 220cm x 250cm. 51% of the panels manufactured belong to Sammy while the rest go to Sony. Of course, Sony is also shacking up with Sharp on a $3.5B LCD plant in Japan ready to swing into production sometime in 2010. Oh Sony, you naughty, naughty minx.

Following up on the DAPs and BD-Live announcements, Samsung’s seen fit to attach prices to its 750 series of LCD HDTVs and their “Touch of Color” frames. At the top end, the 750 ranges from 39.9- to 52-inch sizes, all with 1080p, 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, DLNA network access and 120Hz motion processing for $2,599 - $3,499 when they hit shelves in May. The 650s are already on shelves with 720p or 1080p variations from 19- 52-inch variations, sans-DLNA, but all models include Samsung’s Infolink RSS service for news direct to your flat screen. Don’t have Ethernet in your TV room? The Wireless LinkStick enables either series to pull down news without those pesky physical connections for $34.99. Probably not worth rioting over, but check the read link for complete specs and prices.

Samsung – known for dropping a PMP or two on the public — has introduced a couple of new media players sure to have you tearing up and snapping open piggy banks. First up is the S2 “Pebble” player which we saw a little while back, a tiny, rounded DAP with 1GB of storage on-board that can tune in your favorite FM stations (they still have those, right?) as well as play back MP3, WMA, and OGG files. The S2 comes in green, purple, red, and black / white, which should make it easy to match up with your outfit. The other new offering is the S3, a 4GB or 8GB full-function (yet slim) device which sports a 240 x 320 display, plays MP3, MPEG4, and WMA files, includes an FM tuner, flash games, and comes in green, red, blue, or black / white. Both models will be available in June, no word on price. Stay tuned for a thrilling hands-on experience with both new models.
