The Helio Heat

heat, helio, helio heat, HelioHeat, mvno, samsung, slider

QWERTY fans need not apply — your phone hasn’t quite hit yet — but folks in search of a slick-lookin’ little slider on Helio have another solid choice. Just like its big sib, the Drift, the Heat comes to Helio courtesy of Samsung, but gains touch-sensitive controls and a lower price point. The new model serves up Bluetooth, 136MB of internal memory (though no external — advantage Drift), 1.3 megapixel cam, Helio Music compatibility, and the full suite of GPS goodies including Google Maps and Helio’s “Buddy Beacon” service atop a 2-inch QVGA display.

Look for the Heat to go on sale today for $150 in your choice of Gold and the always-fashionable “Onyx” (alias “black”). Follow the break for a shot of the Heat doing its slide thing in both shades!

Samsung’s SPH-W2500 slider with HSDPA

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

anycall, samsung, slider, sph-w2500, w2500

We’re noticing a trend — anyone think this thing looks like a healthy portion of the sliders Samsung has loosed in recent history? Sure, 13.8 millimeters is nice for a slider and all, but it’s by no means groundbreaking; same goes for the 2 megapixel primary and VGA front-facing cameras, microSD slot, and media support. That being said, we’re hard-pressed to dis any 3G phone that’s managed to make it all the way to the FCC’s hallowed halls, so we’re going to cut the criticism right here and cross our fingers for an expedient arrival on US shores.

KTF’s EV-W100 with Max Headroom technology

avatar, ev-w100, korea, korean, ktf, slider, video calling, VideoCalling

This reminds us a little bit of voice-to-SMS — it’s a feature that’s been perverted in such a way that the original intent has been somehow lost in translation. Don’t get us wrong; with HSDPA, 2 megapixel cam, and A2DP, the EV-W100 from KTF is nice and all (it is, after all, a Korean handset), but the draw here seems to be special software that’ll replace the outgoing video on video calls with an animated avatar as a “security” measure. Now if we’re not mistaken, it takes two to tango when it comes to video calling, so why not just not hold a video call if you’re concerned about the peeps on the other end seeing what’s going on? No bother; we guess it’s pretty cool that a talking pig is one of the avatar choices.

HTC slides in with “Nike” P5500

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

htc-p5500-nike-rumor1.jpg

We don’t generally associate the terms “HTC” and “slider” — at least in the traditional, numeric keypad sense — but it seems the Taiwanese patron saint of all things Windows Mobile would like us to have a change of heart in that regard. The rumored HTC “Nike” (these code names of theirs keep getting weirder and weirder, we swear) should bow as the P5500 when it becomes available this fall in HTC-branded trim, rolling deep with a 400MHz Samsung core, 128MB ROM / 64MB RAM with microSD expansion, integrated FM tuner, Bluetooth 2.0, a 3 megapixel cam, and a 2.6-inch QVGA touchscreen. Best of all, it’ll pack GPS and industrial-strength data via both 802.11b/g and HSDPA (no word on bands, though) — and yes, that is Windows Mobile 6 Professional you see there, hence the touchscreen.

Live shots of Sony Ericsson’s Paris surface, Mr. Blur mysteriously absent

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

Paris, pics, pictures, slider, sneak peek, SneakPeek, sony ericsson, SonyEricsson

Enough of these overly pixelated, totally fuzzed-out captures of something supposed to Sony Ericsson’s Paris — we’re looking at the real deal now. This definitely sexy slider has somehow fell in front of someone without hands a-shakin’, and a smattering of distinct images are waiting just below in the read link. If you just like to be teased, the snapshots show a 5.0-megapixel camera and confirm that the keypad touts a two-character-per-button layout similar to the P1 — but really, there’s nothing like seeing it for yourself.

Telus adds Samsung u510, white Motorola KRZR

canada, clamshell, flip, k1m, krzr, moto, motokrzr, motorola, samsung, sch-u510, slider, telus, u510

We feel like we can barely tell the difference between the white KRZR from Moto and the original gray — especially if you squint your eyes a bit — but choice is always good nonetheless, and to that end Telus has added the paler variant to its lineup. Going toe to toe with the K1m in the high-fashion game, Samsung’s u510 has also found its way onto the CDMA carrier (look familiar?) with a 220 x 176 display, 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot — something its Helio doppelganger lacks — and touch-sensitive controls. Grab your white KRZR for the same price as its grayer counterpart, $149 CDN — or a u510 for $50 CDN less, $100, both on a three-year agreement.

[Thanks, Jay]

Softbank Mobile releases 911T from Toshiba

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by admin

911t, slider, softbank, softbank mobile, SoftbankMobile, toshiba

Yeah, we covered this one before when Softbank first announced it back in January, but its spec sheet is so frickin’ glorious that we felt the need to hit it up one more time now that the Japanese carrier has started populating store shelves with it. The first thing one notices when laying eyes on the 911T slider sourced from Toshiba is the screen — all 800 x 480 of it. Other features include a decent 3.2 megapixel cam, HSDPA, Bluetooth, and a full 1GB of internal storage in a case that measures in under 18 millimeters thick. If you have the good fortune of residing in Japan, pick yours up now from Softbank in your choice of red, gray, black, or white.

Samsung’s new SGH-P960 packs a DVR

Sunday, May 4th, 2008 by admin

-h, samsung, sgh-p960, slider

While some manufacturers stay home pouting about mobile TV’s slow uptake in Europe, Samsung isn’t giving up on the Euro DVB-H market just yet, hoping to entice viewers with better features. The company’s new SGH-P960 adds integrated DVR functionality, like pausing live TV when it rings, meaning you won’t miss any of the action on the slider’s 2.6-inch, 240 x 320 screen. Other TV niceties include picture-in-picture, an on-screen programming guide, and an integrated Bang & Olufsen amplifier. A 3 megapixel cam with LED flash on the back rounds out what sounds like a nice package, but with no word on price or availability outside of Europe it’s hard to get too excited.

Look out, Virgin Mobile subscribers – Samsung’s sliding you one more handset option with its forthcoming Slash. Posted now on the carrier’s own website, said mobile packs integrated Bluetooth, a color display, voice dialing, web access and a talk time of 3.5-hours. Additionally, it tips the scales at just 3-ounces and measures 3.8- x 1.8- x 0.7-inches. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on the real details (you know, resolution, price, release date, whether it works in subarctic temperatures, etc.), but feel free to keep a close eye on the read link as its inevitable launch date draws near.
