Nokia 3250 + 5300 = 5700?

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

Remember the twist-a-riffic Nokia XpressMusic 3250 – that S60 baddie with the rotating keypad? Apparently there’s some legitimacy to the odd form factor, because rumors are swirling that a new 5700 model will update the 3250 with some of the 5300’s thoroughly modern elements. The QVGA display, 2 megapixel cam, and UMTS radio are all well and good, but there’s nothing like a little S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 to brighten our day in the land of music-oriented mobiles. Since this is far from official, we’ve got no word on pricing or release date — but given the rather professional-looking stylized graphic here seemingly advertising the aforementioned model, our money is on it being real (just don’t expect it this side of the pond).

Nokia N77 passes FCC — DVB-H and all

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by admin

Handsets, Multimedia, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

Not to suggest there’s any… oh, you know, “service” you can subscribe to in these parts that rocks mobile TV over the DVB-H airwaves, but an FCC approval is always a good sign — and the presence of an upstart service provider working its rear off to get picked up by a carrier always helps, too. The 3.5mm jack-sportin’, S60-havin’ N77 from Nokia is the latest DVB-H equipped handset to get signed off by the FCC, and while we don’t have any word of a GSM 850, UMTS 850 / 1900 version floating around, we can’t help but hope that an eventual Modeo success could lead to phones like this magically gaining bands; until then, we’ll just be tooling around with our Foreseers.

The “MegaPhone” that towers over 5 feet tall

We all love our 9mm slimphones these days, but sometimes the need for a celly big enough to bear hug just overcomes us all. Enter the “MegaPhone” by SysOpen Digia. This beast from the east is a 5′7″ fully functional handset with real buttons as big as a fist (we think, anyway) and a very, very large color screen, although the rez may be a little blocky. This unit appears to have S60 inside it for use by customers who no doubt will be drawn to a life-size handset that actually works as a functional prop. Now, can it make calls? Doubtful, but we’d love to see a comparably sized Bluetooth headset for this puppy.

Symbian 9.2 hacked to bypass app certification

Monday, May 5th, 2008 by admin

certificate, certificates, hack, nokia, s60, symbian, symbian 9.2, Symbian9.2

App certificates have long been a bane to S60 users and developers alike, causing pain, frustration, and an almost obligatory cash outlay to get your hard work certified to run on the very platform Nokia is so quick to call “open.” Finally, it truly is, thanks to the hard work of the Symbian hacking community that has developed an easy (or easy sounding, anyway) method of “jailbreaking” the Symbian 9.2 device in your life (S60 3rd Edition FP1 users, that’s you). After that, installed apps won’t need a certificate at all — let alone an invalid one — to do their dirty work. Open, indeed.

Rogers getting real with Nokia N95 next month?

Monday, April 28th, 2008 by admin

s, Nokia, Rogers Wireless, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

For a phone that came out in 2006, it’s kinda surprising how much interest (both from carriers and end users) that the Nokia N95 series continues to enjoy. With any luck, we’ll be seeing it launch on AT&T later this year — but Rogers is apparently poised to beat ‘em to the punch. Mobile In Canada reports that Canada’s 800-pound GSM behemoth intends to launch the N95 (the North American, non-8GB model, as far as we can tell) as early as May 2nd — which, alongside the already-launched Sony Ericsson K850i, makes for a powerful one-two combo of 5 megapixel 3G Europhones. Only time will tell, but we’re feeling good about this one, folks; only question is, N95 8GB next?

More shots of Sony Ericsson’s still-unannounced “BeiBei”

Saturday, April 26th, 2008 by admin

beibei, candybar, ericsson, sony, sony ericsson, SonyEricsson, symbian, uiq

Sony Ericsson’s leaky enough so that we’ve had no problem believing that the BeiBei is dead real, but as we’ve seen with the M610i, a very real and very well-developed Sony Ericsson prototype by no means guarantees a release. That being said, we’re starting to get pumped that this one might live long enough to see a store shelf or two — particularly considering that it’s said to rock UIQ 3.3 and looks a heck of a lot better now in its dark, handsome color scheme that the last time we saw it. So, anyone want to get a launch date pool going? This quarter? Next? 2009?
