Look out, Bluetooth — Ozmo Devices has its eyes set squarely on you. Okay, so perhaps such gargantuan truth sucker as adversarial as advertised, but there is no denying the current the aforesaid company’s fresh legislation is planning to goal the precise same devices the present BT is embedded over now. Ozmo has announced a partnership investing in Intel at Computex the are able to provide the latter company’s Cliffside WiFi Personal Area Network (PAN) technology to “low-power devices.” Essentially, WiFi radios who completely stink a reduced amount of juice nowadays will take on double roles — accessing WLAN networks and working at the duties for the most part reserved for Bluetooth — that might enable devices to hold one a reduced number of element stuffed through bulking conditions up. As of now, there is continued no takers on the design, but word on the street has Belkin currently testing the process out for kicks and giggles (or perhaps somewhat way a larger number of serious).

We’re not exactly sure what was going on with that whole on-again / off-again love affair with iPhones having gratis access to AT&T WiFi hotspots, but we’re content with letting bygones be bygones. On the slightly tweaked iPhone “Plans” page, the carrier now lists “Access to AT&T WiFi hotspots” as an included feature along with call forwarding, 3-way calling and Caller ID. Sure, it’s not a bona fide press release, but same difference, right?

AT&T already turns off free WiFi for iPhone users?

Sunday, May 4th, 2008 by admin

Easy come, easy go: looks like that free WiFi for iPhone users could already be turned off, as apparently users are starting to get login screens instead of the free web access they so quickly came to expect. The only real question is whether the whole free iPhone WiFi was simply flipped on early, and will be officially announced at a later time, or AT&T changed its mind about the whole thing. Guess we’ll soon see.

AT&T and Starbucks begin WiFi rollout

Remember that WiFi pact brewed up between AT&T and Starbucks earlier this year? How could you forget, right? As if it wasn’t official enough already, the two have announced that the rollout has begun at company-operated Starbucks locations, and the nationwide effort will continue throughout 2008. Effective May 1st, qualifying AT&T high-speed internet / WiFi customers — that’s those who subscribe to one of the three higher-speed residential broadband packages, a small business broadband package or a U-verse offering with high-speed internet — will have free WiFi access at over 7,000 coffeehouses across the US. Unfortunately, we’re not given any real insight into what kinds of potential deals are in the works for AT&T wireless customers (if any at all), but here’s to hoping you all can get a little love, too.

Spectec microSD WiFi card: loose in May, lose in July

Monday, April 21st, 2008 by admin

Announced way back in 2006, we’ve yet to see the production launch of Spectec’s microSD card with built-in 802.11b/g WiFi. Although late, it’s still a boon for those of us running WiFi-less HTC Touch Duals, for example. Unfortunately, without any mentioned storage in the specs, you’ll be doing a lot of microSD card swapping (and losing) when it ships in May for sampling and then to consumers in July.

Russia wants all WiFi devices to be registered

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 by admin

Sure, we’ve seen the occasional loony look down upon open WiFi access, but Russia is apparently out to really slow down wireless adoption with its latest directive. Reportedly, the Russian Mass Media, Communications and Cultural Protection Service (or Rossvyazokhrankultura for short — no seriously, we swear) is looking to have every user of a WiFi-enabled device obtain permission and register said device before hopping on the world wide web. Even worse, it seems as if every single wireless transmitter and device must be registered, meaning that technophiles will be filling out heaps of paperwork in order to get their handset, laptop, DS Lite, PC and hacked-up Foleo online (legally) via their home-based access point. We’re hearing that registering a single PDA or phone would take around ten days, while signing up a new home network would be even more painstaking. We’ll spare you the snide In Soviet Russia… remarks, but feel free to concoct your own below.

Inkel IDS-1500 WiFi phone dock keeps the iPod in awkward company

You know how Apple products get when they’re around their “lesser” consumer electronics counterparts at parties. It starts with a lack of eye contact and some foot scuffing, and ends badly with a scene in close proximity to the punch bowl. That said, Inkel’s giving it a shot with this here IDS-1500 WiFi phone dock, which mixes an iPod dock with internet radio functionality and song playback through the phone. Not a bad combination in the least, so as long as the iPod steers clear of the alcohol. No word on price or availability.

Chrysler adding WiFi, data to ho-hum ‘09 fleet

Monday, March 24th, 2008 by admin

Chrysler’s added a few features to get geeks’ motors running over the years, but internet access is definitely a fresh direction. Apparently cars rolling off the line this and next year will have some kind of cellular data access (we’re not yet sure if that’s through an straight MVNO or piped through machine to machine data service like Jasper Wireless) and in-car WiFi first as an option, and then eventually standard. Details are sparse but we hear kids can spend, like, hours on the Facebook and the MySpace, so chalk another one up to team parents keeping team back-seat occupied.

Soyntec Wiffinder Laptop Bag With WiFi Signal Locator

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 by admin

Here’s an innovative concept of integrating WiFi location technology into a stylish suitcase, making WiFi hotspot searching easier.

Instead of the usual “take the laptop out of the bag and turn it on and hope there would be a signal” routine, all the user has to do is to look at the LCD display on the bag to get quick information on WiFi signal. The developer Soyntec calls it the “Wiffinder”, which target business executives and travelers everywhere. The WiFi locator on the laptop bag is easy to use. Just a single touch of a button and the user would be able to figure out the available WiFi signal surrounding them. It also has a signal bar indicating the signal strength that would provide a more stable network connectivity. The Wiffinder is also available in a variety of luggages such as a trolley bag, executive case bag, university backpack among others.

There is only one glitch though: The user cannot tell if the signal is free-on-air or encrypted. Overall, despite its usefulness, the Soyntech Wiffinder would probably become overshadowed by more advanced locators in the not-so-near future.
