RED keeps it coming with the RED RAY disk drive

Monday, April 14th, 2008 by admin

RED’s trifecta of hot new gear announcements at NAB wrapped up with the RED RAY optical disk drive, which promises to play back 4K video from the RED ONE, 3K video from the new Scarlet and the usual assortment of HD formats from RED Disc and RED Express media, as well as native R3D RAW files from CompactFlash. 5K video from the new EPIC isn’t supported, though. As with all of RED’s announcements today, specs are promised to change, but the clever name of the drive has us thinking that it’s based on Blu-ray — we’ll keep digging for details.

Standards – Part 12 – The trouble with being a parking company

Monday, April 14th, 2008 by admin

Written by Michael Gilmour , Monday, 31 March 2008
I think that there should be a saying, “Parking, damned if you don’t, damned if you do….”. This is definitely the cast for domain parking companies that are under pressure from multiple directions and now most recently standards and transparency.

My experience has shown that parking companies have either embraced, been silent or have actively worked against the introduction to standards. The reasons for these reactions are sound and are typically self serving (which is not wrong!). Let me share with you a story about a friend of mine and his experience with one particular parking company.
For the past 12 months he had been faithfully adding a lot of domains to his parking account at “Park X” (I won’t say who it is to protect my friend). A strange thing happened, the more domains he added and the more traffic that they accrued the lower his Earnings Per Click fell. This was obviously not a good outcome.

Through a Park X disaffected employee he found out that during this time his revenue share had been reduced by 10%. When he queried his account representative no reasons were given and the length of time it had been reduced was not known.

This simple experience clearly illustrates that due to a lack of transparency a parking company was able to do whatever they liked to a domainers account and the only recourse that the domain owner has is to leave.

This brings me to a point that I raised in an earlier article. There are a number of parking companies that are trying to implement a level of transparency. It is a difficult process and but more importantly what are they being transparent about? The nice thing about these companies is that they are trying to head down the road towards transparency and standards as they are viewing the lack of movement by other companies as a potential competitive advantage. All power to these guys!

Asia opens with >10.000 registrations per day

Monday, April 14th, 2008 by admin

Hong Kong, Apr 14, 2008 - An average of over 10,000 new .Asia domains were successfully registered daily for the first five days upon opening of the first-come-first-served phase (Go Live) of .Asia domain registration. Since then a steady flow of 2,000 to 4,000 new domains are being registered each day.
Globally, .Asia domains proves to be most popular among Chinese registrants followed by Australian, New Zealand, Indian and Korean registrants. US and Japan are also among the top 10 countries registering .Asia domains. “We are very encouraged to see the strong demand coming from registrants in Asia, especially from China and India,” Says Edmon Chung, CEO of DotAsia. “Not only does this add to the strong foundation we have built for .Asia through the startup phases, it presents great opportunity for our registrars to expand their market in Asia. This will ultimately mean more investment into
the Asia market and better realization of the vast potential for the cyber real estate industry in Asia.”
The top 5 registrars in Go Live, in order, are: GoDaddy, Mesh Digital (www.domainmonster.asia), EuroDNS (www.asiadns.asia), Direct Information and Moniker Online Services.

Auctions for domains receiving more than one Landrush application is being scheduled, and will be announced shortly. A total of over 45,000 domains received more than one application and will enter into auction between the applicants. A .Asia Hot or Not Domains Appraisal Contest is being launched for anyone to pick the domain that would fetch the highest auction price for the Sunrise and Landrush auctions. Details are being announced at www.think.asia.

The verification for all Sunrise applications received has been completed. The final success rate for all Sunrise applications is over 95%. “The flexibility built into the .ASIA Sunrise policies and the verification process proved to be successful in accommodating the interests and expectations of brand owners and their registrars,” says Bart Lieben, who directed the process with Deloitte. “I believe this will set the benchmark for domain launches to come.”
“The diligence, thoroughness and flexibility from our Verification Agents, Deloitte and AGIP was a determining factor for the high success rate,” adds Chung. “This builds a strong foundation for adoption of the .Asia domain. We are already seeing global brands using their .Asia domains in regional campaigns across Asia, such as a recent campaign for a renowned whiskey brand, and we are very pleased and excited about it.”

Weekend circulars show jailbroken iPod touch with Installer on board

Sunday, April 13th, 2008 by admin

touch_broken.jpg

We’re not sure who nodded off in the art department, but we’re fairly certain they’re going to be wide awake come Monday morning. Apparently, Radio Shack is running circulars this week featuring the iPod touch… with the Installer and MobileChat icons. We’re sure Apple will be stoked to discover that a jailbroken iPod is hanging out in one of America’s most-viewed ads, and we’re equally sure that buyers will be pleased to learn they don’t really get an IM application with their purchase. Champagne for everyone!

Update: Take a look at a screen grab from the circular after the break.

New York 2008: Nissan unveils 2009 Maxima with “liquid motion” sheetmetal

Sunday, April 6th, 2008 by admin

00_09maximalive_opt.jpg

Ever since Nissan took the Altima upmarket in both size and prize, the Maxima has suffered from an identity crisis. In the Nissan/Infiniti lineup, this premium front-wheel-drive sports sedan suffered a middle-child syndrome while slotted between the less-expensive yet still capable Altima and the more aspirational rear-wheel-drive Infiniti G35 sports sedan. Nissan hopes to give the Maxima a new voice in its crowded lineup of large sedans with the new 2009 model that comes in your choice of a 3.5 S or 3.5 SV trim. Clearly, it packs a visual punch.

The new design is something Nissan calls “Liquid Motion”. It’s dynamic, for sure, with peaks and valleys among flowing lines and sharp creases that combine to form a muscular shape. See a little of the last-gen Nissan Skyline GT-R in that grille? We do, and that’s not a bad thing, though the new wraparound L-shaped headlamps may not go over well with everyone. Despite the large front and rear overhangs, Nissan actually shrunk the Maxima’s length and wheelbase while widening its track. Call the design what you want, but it’s not derivative and the expressive flanks make it truly look like a four-door sports car.

Problems with census PDAs could prompt a return to pencil and paper

Thursday, March 27th, 2008 by admin

Problems ,with ,census ,PDAs ,could ,prompt, a, return, to, pencil, and ,paper

Harris Corp. may have nothing but good things to say about the HTC-made PDAs it’s planning to supply for use in the 2010 census, but it looks like the handhelds are already starting to cause plenty of headaches for census officials, who are reportedly even considering a return to pencil and paper if things can’t be resolved. As the AP reports, the problems start with the contract for the devices, which originally clocked in at $596 million, has since grown to $647 million, and could eventually balloon to as much as $2 billion. As if that wasn’t enough, the handheld has also apparently proven to be “too complex” for some of the temporary census workers that took part in a test last year, and the device was reportedly “not initially programmed to transmit the large amounts of data necessary.” As a result, census officials are now said to be considering a number of different options to scale back the use of the devices, only one of which apparently actually has the headcounters entering data into ‘em as they go door-to-door.

Till then, head on over to Engadget HD for their first look.

DSUS DS-400GB splits rear-view with GPS

Monday, March 24th, 2008 by admin

dsus-ds-400gb-rear-view-gps.jpg

We suppose the line of thinking with the DSUS DS-400GB is that you’re probably already eying your rear-view mirror plenty, so why not just split off a third and throw a 4-inch GPS nav unit up in there? Not a bad idea, but don’t you want to be looking forward — not behind you — when considering your next turn? Not that it’s of any consequence, anyway, this thing’s straight outta China with no US release or distro (yet).

ASUS releases Splendid HD1 video card, sure does have a way with names

ASUS, releases, Splendid, HD1, video, card, sure ,does, have ,a ,way, with ,names

We’re still a little hazy as to exactly what ASUS’s new Splendid HD1 “video enhance card” actually does differently than most other 2D-enhanced devices, but the company claims it ratchets up 1080p video quality on both digital and analog outputs, and it’ll fit in right along side those Splendid-based Xondar cards. Of course, it’s also got HDCP (which is a start), but it’s starting to smell a little gimmicky around here, splendid or not.

Dance With My Father

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008 by admin

fathers-day-cake5.jpg

Album : Dance With My Father
Artist : Luther Vandross

Back when I was a child, before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around ’til I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved
If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way, I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me
Then finally make me do just what my mama said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet

Never dreamed that he would be gone from me
If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me
I know I’m praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved
I know you don’t do it usually
But dear Lord she’s dying
To dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream
